Ghost Deer

We have lots of deer breeders down here, many of them are unscrupulous. You know what The Bible says about money, and the love of it. Several years ago, right after the “no imported or exported deer” law passed, a rich guy near me imported some deer and turned them loose inside his high fenced property. For his troubles, they fined him an ungodly sum and killed every deer on his place. When it comes to moving deer around, Texas don’t play. The state will tear you a new one if you get caught.

IMO, this is as it should be. I have nothing against high fences, especially for exotics. I have hunted and killed axis does inside a 200 acre enclosure. Grocery shopping ! They are very good to eat, but they aren’t easy to kill. When they are pressured they will move at dark or after. The last one I killed was free range about two hours after dark using a day/night scope. The problem begins when you start talking about whitetails. They belong to the state, makes no difference where they come from. The state doesn’t recognize the fence as far as hunting seasons, hunting hours, tagging, etc. Too many people let the size of antlers rule them when it comes to deer hunting and that leads to breaking game laws. I’m afraid lots of people get away with it so long that they think it’s their right to kill whatever they want whenever they want. I’ve known too many of them.

The article you referenced is just about money, that’s all. Greedy a-holes trying to beat the laws that are in place to try to minimize CWD. They couldn’t care less about the general public or the health of the deer herd. I had already heard about this on Texas BowHunter forum. Lots of heated discussions on that forum about deer breeders, pro and con. Some guys try to justify it by saying they make their living off of it. IMO, they picked a piss poor way of making a living. I enjoy shooting a mature buck as much as anyone, but I’m aiming for an older buck, not bigger antlers. No pun intended 😀

That said, I have zero problem with someone who wants to fence “their” deer in and “your” deer out, and manage the deer for big antlers through age and nutrition. I am against breeding for freaks that can barely hold their heads up and that sell for $30K+, only to be shot like an old milk cow. It’s disgusting to me.

I betcha didn’t think I was gonna crawl up on my soapbox did you ? 😜

I love it! I like people who have an opinion, rather than wishy-washy politicians who don't know where they stand on something until they do a poll. And in this case, your soapbox is about lined up with mine.
I was trying to figure out what was going on between the authorities and these individuals and you have explained it very well, greed going all the way back to Genesis.
Whitetails are wild creatures that can't ever be domesticated, and they don't do well in small pens. The deer farms only exist to make lots of cash off of the greed for buying big antlers with no time, skills, or effort needed, at the expense of lots of diseases. Deer farming big antlers in little pens is doing tremendous longterm damage to the fair chase of free range deer in the wild, and I feel like it would be a good thing if deer farming were outlawed.

I’m on board, but I’m afraid the money will win out.
I don't expect anything to change in the near future, but the best hope to save deer health everywhere is the wildlife biologists, they know the truth about this, that deer farms breed more diseases than they are worth, and they'd have the clout to motivate one state to outlaw them and maybe get a watershed movement started.

So Drycreek, is it because it’s an exotic species that you can hunt axis deer at night in Texas? Are captive whitetails on private land also allowed to be hunted at night? I know in Louisiana on private land we can hunt hogs at night.

Yes, because they are exotics. Texas does not exert control over anything that is not native except that you do have to have a hunting license. I don’t know about the laws (or lack of) on trapping exotics. Axis deer are routinely trapped on private land and sold either to individuals or in auctions. They do not get CWD, just like pronghorns do not. I don’t know about red stags, blackbucks and whatever else is out there. There are more animals of some species in Texas than their origin country, axis being one of them. Blackbuck too probably. They were killed out in their country of origin to the point that there are only a few left, much like it was in our country in the late 19th century and early 20th century.
