Game on! Or Live From the Hog Pen

Guess it was just a matter of when they showed back up. Trap time and cell camera time.

How do you call the hogs? With a pile of corn! Go Lak - pile 'em up.

Time to get the trap up and running?

Yep. I have one close by and will set it up in this exact spot. Good to already have a camera picture so now I can set up the trap so the door shows up in each picture.

Maybe Merle Hawggard can help with the calling!

I smell bacon. I try to accept a lot of animals good and bad in the habitat, but I'm just sure those things would test my religion if I get them. Our DNR will come harvest them if you report one on your property in this state. We have russian boar stocked early 70's that still have decent numbers and a legitimate hunting season. But don't think they cause the same issues.

I miss hog hunting. I need to find a place in SC where I can go. When I was at Fort Benning we had an unlimited supply. Get'em Lak!

I'm sorry to see that your property has been invaded by the most destructible animal on the planet...my condolences. Fighting hogs is fun at first until they take over and start destroying your habit for deer and turkey. There is no place for hogs if your goal is habitat improvement for deer and turkeys. My advice is to go after them aggressively with trapping and dogs. I've found it more effective to get after them with dogs. At least that makes them leave...for awhile.

I got invited to SC next weekend with my boy to go hog hunting. I have plenty of frequent flier miles to burn and it sounds like a ball so we said yes. My buddy is baiting with a mixture of yeast, corn, sugar, grape koolaide aide, salt and beer. We will be sitting on tripods waiting for the pigs to dig it up.

I'll post pictures if anything interesting happens.

These were the first hogs we have seen this year, and last year very rarely ever saw one in daytime. All that bait sounds enticing. I have one "ace in the hole". This past October I collected buckets full of sawtooth acorns from the streets of Montgomery, AL. I threw out about a gallon today and will put acorns at the trigger when I get ready to set.

He digs a hole and buries it. Says it's like crack for the hogs. He puts the mixture in a 5 gallon bucket, when the top pops off it's done. I think he's making grape moonshine.

Well, last night was first visit since I put up the catch pen. This one just passed thru briefly but never went in for a snack

Also, got a visit from this guy, but only briefly and he only showed his crown.

Is the trap set now or are you going to leave it open for a while? How is the set? I have tried many different ones. There is never a one way is right for every situation. Coons, little ones, deer, and whatever else can set them off. What are you using for bait? I've used a lot of for but switched to mixing it with leftover house food, gravy is awesome, etc simply so the deer would stay out.

Trigger is not set now. I have a bolt in the door to keep it from falling. I want them to go in and out a bit before I set the trigger.

You can see the rope going from the door, to a tree out of picture, and then to the ground where it is tied to a stick, balanced on two pieces of rebar. To set I put a lot of bait at the rebar and the hogs root it loose. Has worked so far. Had a friend who taught me last year.

So far I have only used corn for bait, along with some acorns that I collected last fall.
I have at home some beer left over from some late summer gatherings. I plan to put some corn and beer in a five gallon bucket and let is sit for a few days. Maybe that will sweeten things up a bit.

The beer will work fine. The love it when corn starts to ferment. We have used all kinds of stuff. Koolaid packets in it work fine also. I have not found anything better than gravy though. As far as the trigger, rebar with a stick is fine. I would recommend trying to get it at different weights. You don't want a coon or 5lber to set the trap. We also have food all around the trap to get more in before it is set. This way they don't run straight to the trigger. You have a nice setup. I think we all make them similar. I just can't see as much of it as I wish on a cell though going back to your earlier picture during the day I see more. Sometimes I need to back up and reread a thread before posting.

I never have used the set by remote triggers. Those would be sweet with a cell camera.

Oh one more thing if you have not thought about it. If you get 2 ft high chicken wire it will stop most of the little ones from getting out. Not sure if you have thought of that or not. It has helped us a lot in the past. We just wire tie it in.

Our stands are baited for next weekend in SC. I think we have 5 baits. All are getting hit either at first light or dusk. Got a bunch of pictures but they are not as interesting as deer. All look the same. This one though had a brown one which is cool
