After wet spring and early summer the faucet turned off and we stayed in a severe drought until this week
Sept 1 , I went ahead and sprayed for grasses even tho I knew it would have minimal effect w dry non growing conditions. Used 16oz Cleth , 32 Butyrac, 32 AMS and 16 crop oil. This would be normal mix /ac but I sprayed 2+ ac to keep from burning the stressed clover. Even tho these don’t attack clover they can cause a minor burn in drought times to clover. Thus the burn of grasses and weeds was good enough but not great.
I then broadcasted WR 150#/ac and WC , again rejuvenating my neglected plots during logging. No rain until today which should jump start all w the cooler weather. No brassicas seed to be wasted this year.
Burn was decent as you can see. Carpeting WC laying tight to the ground. Heavy acorn crop dropping should free up browsing and clover should rebound
Does drought do some good things? Yes. It stresses even the bad flora and can make good comebacks of wanted flora when managed properly. It also depletes amount of harmful insects that are detrimental to trees and plants. Do I like it? Not really but then I’m not all knowing as God
Now I’ll get grief as I’ve shown before. Especially in dry hot conditions the presence of weeds/grasses has almost a symbiotic relationship w clover. They protect the clover from heat and wind this reducing the drought effects. Walk around. See for your self the clover will be much taller in these conditions. Pictures show example of each. Trust me
Of the trees I’ve planted Silky Dogwood and Hazelnut have been my favorite. You must cage. Deer love browsing them
Tree tubes. You know I hate them. Total waste of my money 10 years ago. Most now lay in a pile after removing.
Silky w cage. And one still in tube. Both planted same time near each other
Wasps love them so if you like getting stung during maintenance then go for it
Berries and acorns heavy this year. Apples and pears nonexistent.
Pokeweed. Bear love it. And did you know it’s an antioxidant. Don’t eat the seeds
Btw so is Goldenrod. Take the flowers place in a tea strain and place in cup for an antitoxin colon supporting drink. Mix in light honey for sweetness. It’s not all about deer you know. Learn your land. Ask why certain things occur. Dig into the ground and look close. What is going on besides your obvious observation??
Made several scrapes today. Break down branch. Scrape basket size area w boots. Piss in dirt. Deer do the rest. Don’t waste your time on any high dollar junk. I’ve tried them all and this is the best. I shot my 8pt last year here as he dropped down towards me after checking the scrape.
And finally. Took a 2000 mile road trip to Maine this past wk. I assure you the best oysters and lobster on either coast. Great people and awesome scenery.
Bow season starts this week and my recurve will be back in action. Turn off your phone. Listen to the demons inside your head. Hear what God maybe has been trying to speak for a long time.
Peace
