This is one of my DCO's I got from Blitz as an acorn three years ago. Joker is blooming like crazy. Really weird to see a tree that small blooming.

Is that the typical size after 3 years? Seems the couple I grew from acorns last year are that big. Mine are just starting to bud out.
 
No clue. They got browsed by deer last summer so that slowed them up but they never grow very much for me.
 
The growth can really vary. I have 3 in the yard at my house and none of them look the same and they are all the same age. Got my first acorns off of them last year. The largest one I have is probably 6' tall now and I believe is 4 maybe 5 years old. I have struggled to get smaller ones to grow at the farm, I transplanted some larger ones this spring that I had root pruned and replanted in the nursery a couple of times, hoping my luck is a bit better with them.
 
Neat trees. I planted one in the front bed of my house where I wanted a small, colorful tree. It sure is pretty in the fall but only about 4 feet tall.
 
Jury still out on my experience

Have 10-12 in 3gal RBIIs starting their second season in back yard

Barely breaking bud Leaves look different on them all. Also grew from seeds I got from Blitz

Here's the one in the front yard. Same age as the one blooming, but this one isn't yet. It has the main trunk that shot up last year as a root shoot. The smaller portion of the tree was what it was when I planted it.

Not a great pic, but my native DCO's are blooming right now.

My one surviving DCO is 6-8 years old. It sets acorn caps every year but never makes mature acorns?

Interesting! I have native Burr, Chinkapin, and DCO on my place. It's hard to tell the difference between the Chinkapin and the DCO unless you follow bloom and drop dates (and of course the DCO will produce nuts when they are only knee high). The leaves and nuts of these trees look VERY similar! My Burr oaks vary greatly in leaf shape and size. I wonder if I actually have some hybrids going on. I've never thought much about it because I've read that Burrs are known for this, but I suppose it's a possibility. I wonder if anything will cross once my swamp white's and Concordia start getting large enough to flower?
