D&DH food plot article

I was a little surprised

They did an article about the best food plot seeds in different categories

This is what I remember

Soybeans - Agree

Brassica - daikan radish. I like Winfred/ PTT. Radish is only good early then rots

Whiteclover - I ageee its good but found better luck with alfalfa. They had alfalfa 3rd

Wheat - I like oats/AWS peas. Oats 2nd

Interested in everyone’s opinion

I read the article. I use about everything they mentioned. Different cultivars for different situations. Diversity. They left joint vetch out which is one of my favorites.I use regular soybeans vs Eagle or any of the vining because it fits my rotation better. Perhaps unique to my situation. All in all good article which I agree with though I put Durana above the white clover they proposed for my situation

I also liked the article on culling. Jives with my experience.

I agree with the culling article too if you’re trying to improve antler quality

I still cull. Not thinking I’m improving antler quality but I do it to make room for better bucks. The land (I’m a small property owner) only can hold so many bucks imo. If you have a bully 3/4 year old with poor antlers they need to go. We don’t do this with young bucks

I would say in my area
semi ripe milo
green soybeans
wheat,for late fall and winter

Exactly my experience. Every time I plant milo it get destroyed in about a week. They don't touch it until a certain point, then a week later there is nothing left. I've planted oats and winter rye many times, wheat beats both for attraction hands down. Can't go wrong with beans.

Steve B used to preach this all the time. I wish he still posted on one of the forums.

I think this can be so area specific and probably even ground or acre specific. Forage soybeans are my number one summer planting. Wheat for cool season - oats ten to yellow out quicker on my wetter ground, and durana for my lower ground and arrowleaf for the drier ridge tops. Havent had much luck at all with brassicas anywhere.

Up north I can’t imagine planting forage soybeans over regular beans that produce a lot of pods for winter feed

We dont even hunt our soybeans. They are primarily meant as a high protein summer food source for does/fawns and antler growth - and to keep the bachelor herds around. Maybe some early season bow hunting
