Cutting for firewood

The annoying invasive I'm dealing with is Prickly Ash. It grows so tall and thick that it seems as if nothing is able to get through it. There is a lot of it starting in a poplar clear cut I made a year ago. I hope to keep on top of it with herbicide before it gets too well established.

He is a real beauty Rusty. He definitely has that John Wayne swagger that says I'm in charge here. It is so exciting to see that many NY properties are beginning to grow nicer deer. If I drive thru ST. Lawrence county, I'll be sure to drive extra careful and watch out for him.

Thanks Chainsaw. This vid cam was on a heavily used trail through an edge of thick cover. Had probably 4 or five bucks on it in a few weeks. He was the biggest. I like the video mode if the camera is not too active. I'm still looking for a bed to put one on.

Rusty, that is one of my favorite John Wayne clips as well. I have not used the video mode yet. I set the camera on three pics for each hit instead and in most cases it gave me enough to age and ID each buck captured. Presuming you have used both video and still pic mode did you find the videos to be not as clear as the still pics or were they the same? I'm estimating that buck as a very solid and healthy 2 1/2 year old; He is large now weight wise but he must have been a real tank back in early November. And on this property from what I have seen over the years he would be in the top ten percent of our 2 1/2 year olds. It is next year that the mass and longer beams of a buck like yours really begin to pop here.

Your chosen camera spot there is awesome. The high stem count and diversified growth of the merging forest types just scream out at one as a special spot to meet up with the best deer on a property. It is just a picture perfect spot. And yes the bedding spots are also magical. I had cameras on at least three other bedding spots than the one we looked at and each one had incredible daytime action during the rut and were regularly visited by young and old bucks just as that first one was. Waiting a full month plus to do card pulls on those was a stretch for me but it turned out that the results were well worth the wait. On this property the best times to find the rutting bed spots has been when our spring thaws occur; the bedding spots just stand out as THE spots when the snow is all gone and the activity from the rut reveals itself to us. Of course we see the beds in the snow now but most of them are not the ones they use during the peak of the rut.

I admire your tenacity to get out there and work the habitat during these extreme cold temperatures we have been having. It should keep you young.
 
I can't tell the difference in quality between still pix and video. Some players do a better job with the video than others.

Cutting firewood is quite the workout for me. It's hard to believe a man can sweat in 10* weather.

I haven't looked for good bedding sites. I do see that there are a few beds around the treetops that they have been nibbling on.

Looks like you have plenty of advice from others more experienced at this than I. Do love running the chainsaw in winter.

I saw St. Lawrence County, NY and thought I'd mention my family is from Gouverneur and we still have a small camp on Mud Lake. Love that amish country. Stay warm my friend!
 
Thanks Beechnut. I do some Kayaking on Mud lake. Those small bodies of water are so beautiful and peaceful.
