Crossbow Thoughts

Glad your dad is still wanting to hunt. I will be hunting exclusively with a crossbow this year due to my shoulder surgery. I have an Excalibur Vortex. I purchased it after reading all the reviews. Accurate and easy maintenance. I can even change my own string since it is a recurve, but like stated is seems loud to me but I have never shot another crossbow. I went to shoot it today and unfortunately I couldn't cock it due to very little strength in my left arm. I ended up shortening the cocking rope and now I can get it cocked. If I had to do it all over again I would purchase one with a crank. I've looked at the Brownings and they seem really sweet but run well over $1000.

hows the balance on that nitro? considering one but heard they are front heavy really bad

Fine; however, I learned my lesson last year in ND; single digit temp & snowy weather;
6 layers plus body heat suit & I free-handed the Mission on 2 P&Y bucks; I grazed chest on 1 buck & stuck upper shoulder on the other; SOO, I Shall forever to eternity utilize my shooting sticks in the field, i.e. Ground blind, shooting house, or ladder stand.

When I was shopping for a cross-bow I remember a few observations I made.
#1 - they are much louder than a compound bow.
#2 - they are much heavier than a compound bow
#3 - they are much more awkward than a compound bow
#4 - to improve 1 & 2 costs $$$$$
#5 - they require carry a lot of energy, so make sure you have a crossbow specific target - otherwise you may blow right thru your current target you use for your compound.

I bought a cheap Barnett for me and my boy to use because I wasn't sure just how much hunting with it we would do. I like the idea of it not being individual specific. You don't need to practice AS MUCH with one. They - like a compound - can kill a deer at 60 yards......IF the shooter has the practice. The sound level and weight was the biggest surprise for me. I do like a crossbow over a compound if your a late season hunter (because of the bulk of the clothing you need). I typically am not one of those guys, but IF it comes to that I can.

If he didn't like a compound he will hate a crossbow.....but you do what you have to do to stay in the game......sure beats sitting on the couch!
