Did you have assistance dragging your deer out of the woods with you handicap? Biggest problem I have with crossguns. People claim an injury to justify using a crossgun. Funny thing though. Same injury doesn't stop them the other 10.5 months out of the year. Just sayingI began with a recurve waaaay back in the 1960s. Compounds have come a LONG way from when they first came out. So many gadgets on em. And even trigger release. NO Fingers,,like I began with. Why all these innovations ,,gadgets ? Drop away rests. 80% let off. Why ? to make using a bow EASIER! Yep easier. Like CrossBows are too" EASY". I was instrumental in getting Cross Bows legal for the handicapped in MI. This paved the way to Full inclusion now. And I am glad.. My severe scoliosis led me to a crossbow. Still an arrow with a broadhead on it. Still close range hunting. Oh I know dummies that try for 50 yrds but to be real,,30 or less is what you want. The Industries keep soupin up Compounds and Crossbows. They both are far beyond whats needed to take the life out of game animals. Just like cars, though there always has to be something NEW. I also hunt low. Hard to move without a deer spying you at 10 ft or on the ground. Especially with educated deer who keep an eye on the trees from experience. To draw back a bow on an animal you have to go quite high, Not with My back! Deer are educated, At least in my area. Crossbows are old weapons. The souped up compounds are not like the ancient bows. Crossbows have been souped up too , but you can still purchase just a bow and a string. Bow and arrows are NOT firearms with bullets. When hit with a Rifle bullet or a shot gun slug, deer do not usually run for 150 yrds, which is what my Crossbow deer did this season. Crossbows are easier in some ways and more difficult in some ways. So are Compounds compared to Recurves. All shoot arrows at animals that should be close. All bows require stealth and planning and still patient waiting to get game near. All bows with arrows should be accepted .
Scope, trigger, rifle stock......it could launch turds for all I care. I would still call it a crossgunIts not a CrossGun,,It's a bow, with an arrow, Crazy thing about game laws. They are fickle. In Mi They were hated by the Bow Hunters Association . A scurge. Would ruin bow hunting. The first handicapped licenses you first had to see an MD,,then you had to be examined by a physical therapist,,then you had to see another MD, to confirm it all . Many hoops for this dangerous new weapon. Only reserved for the handicapped. Now it is free to use by anyone in MI. What changed? It's dumb. The tide is rolling. Many state now accept them in the general bow season as they should be. And no I cannot haul my deer around the woods. I do have a deer cart but now days I just take the meat off em where they drop. My old back and the rest of me for that matter aint young anymore.
. so don't say, "Oh those crossbows are too EASY"
I know several rifle hunters who bought a crossbow the first year they were legal. Many of those crossbows are collecting dust in a closet. For whatever reason it just wasn't their thing. I had the same fear (that bowseason would get overrun with guys switching), but didn't see it.Main reason the vertical bow guys in my area are against Cross Bows is they are afraid gun hunters will flood the bow season taking up Cross Bows and shoot too many of their precious Booners. And this fixation over horn is a topic for another post.
Perfectly Said. This subject has been hashed and rehashed over numerous forums, and mostly with a lot of rhetoric from compound and stickbow users aimed at crossbow users. It will NEVER be settled because the imperfect human in us wants everyone to like what we like, use what we use, think like we think. Well! boys and girls, that ain’t happening ! Think about what a dull vanilla world that would be !
I’ve used rifles, handguns, compound bows, and shotguns to kill deer. I own a crossbow, haven’t hunted with it but once, and nothing came close enough for a shot. If you think everything about a crossbow is easy, then lug one of the bulky, heavy, and generally clumsy suckers around the woods ! Try to get a quick second shot off if you need to. Yes, they are easy to shoot accurately, but that’s where the easy stops. Nothing else about them is easy. Not easy to get in the stand, in the tree, or carry through the woods. Hell, they’re not even easy to haul in your truck or ATV. I personally wish I didn’t have to use one to keep in the game, I’d much rather shoot my Elite Synergy. You won’t ever see me shooting the crossbow for fun.....ever. It’s not fun to me.
Another thing you won’t see me doing is belittling another hunter for what he uses as long as it’s legal. The argument that it’s not archery holds no water. Crossbows have been around for hundreds and hundreds of years, so there’s that. My state says it’s archery, so as far as I’m concerned it’s archery. If you don’t like them, then don’t use them.
I think it was Abe Lincoln who said a house divided against itself cannot stand. As hunters, we have bigger problems than who uses what to put venison in the freezer.
Yep. Use a App to tell you where to hunt based on the wind and what to expect to see there based on a Pic that was sent to your phone 10 states away via Cellular Signal, while using your Sight that now come offered with Built In Range Finders, Lazer Light Sighting and who knows what else.I really find this whole discussion hilarious. Complaining about crossbows over compounds over traditional bows by a bunch of people that were upset that Tapatalk wasn't working on their smart phones while they were in their heated, elevated fiberglass hunting blind with the tinted fold down windows. An entire generation, maybe two or three, that is lost in technologies that run their entire lives. Let's start whining about the high tech muzzleloaders ruining that season or ATV's making it easier for lazy people to get deep into the woods. Or depth finders taking the skill out of finding fish. And, heaven forbid, the pansy waists that can't handle the cold without the latest Gortex, electrically heated full body jump suit instead of good old fashioned red plaid wool hunting outfit that was passed down through 4 generations. GET REAL people. Every one of us, in this discussion, is a hypocrite in some way or another.
Thanks for bringing this discussion back to reality. I'm just trying to figure out how you saw me hunting in my blind?I really find this whole discussion hilarious. There's one in every crowd.Jack, I have to disagree, I’m no hypocrite ! I don’t care if you freeze your butt off while I’m toasty in my blind. I don’t care if you use a spear to take your deer. I don’t care if you estimate your range when I know mine to the fraction of a yard. I don’t care if you sweat like a logging mule while I scoot within 200 yards of my blind with a golf cart.
Just don’t shoot any spikes or we gonna have words !
Just don't shoot any forkhorns or we gonna have words. There's one in every crowd.
And then there were two! It seems to be contagious. And by the way, I only shoot 250 pound tens. That way I only have to drag one out every twelve years or so.Just don't shoot any forkhorns or we gonna have words.
