Crabapple

I found this on my farm in west central KY a few weeks ago. Crabapple I presume, but wasn't sure if anyone on here might be able to ID? It was found along a right of way/access road about a mile from blacktop so I'm almost positive it wasn't planted. Are there native crabapples in KY?

My guess is that you have a wild "Southern Crabapple."

The are rare in Kentucky, but look below at the native range map and you will see some small areas of Western KY where they have been found. I have one planted at my place and it has fruit similar to yours this year. The leaves on your tree look larger than mine, but there is quite a bit of variation from tree to tree in this species.

Hmm that must be it I would guess. Im going to release that tree this winter and mark it to keep it protected. Pretty cool to find something like that right under my nose! Thanks!

Excellent find Luke! In the occurrences of finding new apple trees over the years it has always been the case that where one was found, there were more in the immediate area. They are easier to find in the bare winter of course once you have your apple tree eyes on.

I'm hoping you're right! I've been working hard on my tree ID skills since I joined this forum and it definitely paid off with finding this tree! Our season starts next week so I likely won't be venturing into that part of the farm much until January. I'll be sure to scour the nearby area when I release that tree this winter.
