Found some more pics online showing variation of leaf characteristics. Apparently it's fairly common with this species of oak.

Most of mine resemble the bottom pic (pic #4). However, I do have one that I mentioned previously that looks similar to pic #3.

A very interesting oak indeed. Can't wait to hopefully get a few acorns this year and start the first round of Concordia trees grown from my own stock. My wife doesn't know this but we can never sell our house now since these trees would go with it if we ever did. LOL Well at least not until my other Concordias down in the deer woods start producing. We actually have a future homesite (located on family land) in mind if we can ever get to a point financially where we can do it and I've thought about going ahead and planting a few trees down there just to get a head start.

Just make sure when you sell your current place that you put in the contract that you are granted "dendrological rights" every year to pick up acorns and chestnuts. If sellers can maintain mineral rights, then you ought to be able to retain acorn rights also.

That’s a good idea but I doubt a prospective buyer would go for it. In addition to all my food plot trees I have a dozen or so paper shell pecan trees that produce every year. Those trees were planted when I built the house and are just now getting into their prime. The good news is that my Chestnut orchard is planted on a .5 acre tract next to our house that was acquired later and not apart of the original acreage the house is on. So if the house ever did same that .5 acres would most likely not be included.

Acorns are completely brown now as well as the caps. However they are still hanging tight to the tree. Another week or two and I think they’ll be ready. I forgot to take my phone with me when I checked them earlier and it’s about to come a storm right now so I’ll post a pic later. Would be nice if the drop time on these coincided with the first part of bow season here in Texas. I could see some really good hunting under these trees in another ten years.

The first acorns off my Concordia Oaks. There’s maybe a handful more that still look a little green to me. I was afraid birds were going to get these so I went ahead and picked them.

It is now 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 1 and MDC says that the Concordia oaks are sold out. Does anyone know if they sold out in the previous 16 hours or do they just not have any this year? I should have bought some earlier this year when they were available. Oh well.

I called MDC to pay for a re-allocation of dogwoods and while I had the nice lady on the line I asked about the Concordia oaks. They did have some this year but sold out quickly.

Ended up with 22 acorns off of two trees. Maybe I’ll have enough to fill out a rootmaker 18 propagation tray next spring.

My understanding is that the original trees that used to live at that rest stop were bulldozed into oblivion a few years back when the rest stop was expanded. Is that not the case?

Is there a known (public) spot or spots in Concordia that the Concordia’s are growing where acorns can be gathered without trespassing? I’m back & forth on I-70 a lot and would like to gather some if possible (is it too late? Have they all already dropped?) I received 25 of them from the MDC this spring and most appear to be doing well in their tubes...except for the ones that the tubes have been torn up & destroyed by an apparent angry buck.

As far as I know the original trees are gone. I think I read where there was maybe one or two trees at a courthouse possibly in Concordia? I bet if you were to stop and ask the locals may know.

My trees have already dropped so you may be too late. Good news is that in another three or four years your trees should begin to supply you with enough acorns to keep you busy. My two trees produced 22 acorns this year. Enough for a Rootmaker 18 flat of trees next spring.

I should also mention that a forum member sent me 20 or so acorns last year, all of which I started in rootmaker cells prior to transplanting in to 3 gal fabric pots. I’d like to give the forum member credit for sending me those as it was a tremendous gesture and extremely appreciated, but I don’t want to bombard him with a bunch of acorn requests! Ha! Should I keep them in their pots over-winter or try to get them in the ground? If they’ll be ok, I’d like to maybe plant them in spring. They’re all doing great with lots of big leaves & about a foot tall, so I don’t want to blow it!

Would it work just to bring them inside my unheated garage and bunch them into a corner, or will the freeze over winter kill them? I’ve also got a storm cellar that stays very cold, but doesn’t freeze. I’m not trying to be lazy, I’m just not 100% sure where I want to put them. If neither of those options are good, I’ll get them all in the ground.

There is one big tree at the MO state fair grounds, south of the MDC building. Not sure how the fair grounds work in September/October, but that would be a place to start.

All the rest are on private ground that I’m aware of.

I’d like to know where the dco’s are that we’re part of the original cross for this 3-way hybrid.
