Cobweb killing trees

Saw on one of my apple tree limbs what looked to be a cobweb. It was surgically wrapped around the limb and turned the leaves brown. I removed it.

What is it and what can I do to prevent it or kill it?

Sounds like tent worms. When you see worms shake a little sevin dust into the web.

Seven also comes as a spray - I try to pull open the "tent" if possible to help further expose the little critters. But I agree in that is sounds like tent worms.

You can also spray BT on the leaves if the tree is small enough.
