Heck yes they help with my habitat improvements. Some even seem to love it.
I will sacrifice several of my trees to study root systems, but I do end up with seedling for myself. Not a problem as I supply the seed and growing median from my own pocket, the district doesn't buy anything that I take home. Many kids have toured or fished my property so it's also nice to be able to say "Remember the tree project you did as a freshmen? Here are some of those trees that we started at the same time".

Had a kid very interested in tap root vs fibrous root structure and the 4in rule. He wanted to try carrots in rootmaker 18's... so we now have carrots to plant.

I can see it now. The day we hand out those pencils; a hand raises... "Mr. Catscratch, may I use the pencil sharpener?". 5 minutes later "my pencil is to short, can I plant it now?".
Lol. I like it, very cool idea.
