Chinese Chestnuts

I realize it’s getting late but if anyone would like a few late dropping chestnuts send me a PM and I’ll try to get some out to you. These will come off trees that are consistently dropping mid-October. I ship small flat rate priority box. Cost is $9.40. I take PayPal friends and family and Venmo. Limited quantities.

I also have Texas grown Dunstan and earlier dropping mid-Sept Chinese nuts also in limited quantities.

Not going to be able to grow trees like I normally do this year so thought I would offer nuts to the group rather than let them go to waste. Otherwise I will take most of them down to the deer woods and poke them in the ground, use what tree tubes I have and hope for the best.

All nuts were grown in Texas at my home orchard.

Okay guys thanks for all the interest. After boxing the the remaining orders from last night I think I have enough late droppers for one more order if someone wants them. It will depend on how many floaters there are. I store all my nuts in dry storage at about 35 degrees as it keeps them from germinating in the fridge. The downside to this is that you will have a few that will dry out. Some of these floaters will go ahead and germinate but since I’m selling most of my chestnuts this year I’m keeping those for myself. I also still have a few Dunstan and regular Chinese nuts available.

Also, I think everyone knows this but want to make it clear that I make no guarantee on the drop times on the late dropping nuts only that they came from trees in my orchard that drop late. The nuts from these trees may or may not have the late dropping gene as we do not know the pollen parent. It’s a high probability that it could be another late dropping tree as there are several in a group in my orchard but there are also other trees present as well. So keep that in mind when you grow these and don’t be surprised if you get one that drops later and one that drops earlier from the same group of nuts.

Yes , however there is a bit of overlap so it is possible that another Chinese or some earlier dropping variety could have crossed with them.

Now’s the time to fertilize if you can afford it. Like everything else it’s gone though the roof this year. I just use good ole 13-13-13 on my chestnuts. Measure the diameter of the trunk of your tree and apply that many pounds of fertilizer spread evenly out to the drip line.

It’s been 7 years since I’ve grown chestnuts from seed. How long before those start peaking up out of the pots Matt? It has been pretty chilly at night here yet and I have them out by the back porch where they will get Sun about half the day, do they need a warmer temp before they begin growing?

Don’t rush them. Still some cold nights ahead.

Have they started sending down a root radical yet? I assume they have? Usually within a couple of weeks I’d say.

I put them in the pots on March 15th. I’m not sure what’s going on underneath the dirt. I don’t want to take a chance of messing any up. I put them in 1 gallon pots, about 1.5” deep. I laid the nuts on their side. Probably half of them had sprouted a radical when I planted them.
 
I’ve assumed the cooler temps have slowed them up a bit. No super hard freezes, but it’s been pretty cold some nights.

You can gently remove the dirt around one just enough see if the radical has extended down into the soil. Don’t try to pull the nut up or anything like that though. This would also give a chance to look for the stem of the tree pointing up and how close it might be to emerging through the soil.

Be patient

If they put down a radical, they will soon have top growth

In my experience, it can take 2 to 3 weeks before they do when planted mid March
