Here are some burrs and chestnut trees. If I plant these this winter think they’ll make it?

If you plant them in the right soil and provide some deer protection I don’t see why they wouldn’t make it. I wouldn’t hesitate to plant them. Nice looking trees.

Thank you!
It’s a struggle to get these through the hot Texas summers but they are being planted in south central Oklahoma. They will get tubed and watered throughout the summer. Do trees need to be watered during the winter when they are dormant?

I water in the winter the first yr or two. After that they are on their own... I'm not going to baby them forever but I will give them an honest chance at life. Winter is my favorite time to plant potted trees. I believe it gives them a better chance their first summer.

Yes, if the soil is dry, trees will die in winter from drought! I recommend at a minimum a 5'x5' weed mat for each tree, and they will need protection from both deer and rodents. Window screen around the base of reach tree will protect from rodents, and then they need to be caged from deer. Remove cages in about 8-10 years or longer!!!

The roots on those trees are circling the pots, so they must be planted. I plant before the ground freezes.

The ground really doesn’t freeze where I am. I had about that many trees that were potted die last winter and I did try to water them from time to time. I guess just not enough?

I’ll tube them and keep an eye on them. Cross my fingers.

The weed mat is also a moisture barrier. A 5'x5' weed mat is an absolute must in your area! Moisture is always evaporating from the ground, and will be trapped under a weed mat. If there is no rain, you will still need to water, but not as often or as much.

Use the white crystals that hold 1,000 times their weight it water. I buy mine from the Wildlife Group in Alabama. Moisture mizer is the name they call it - other products that do the same thing are sold under different names. If you use the mats that Brushpile suggest and add the moisture mizer to the hole you plant them in at their final location you will have given them their best chance to use available water.

Your trees n the photo look great. You are doing many things right. Just remember when you plant them, nature is going to allow the best to survive and reclaim the weak ones. Just how it works in nature. So if you get 80% survival, the deer and other wildlife should love you because then will benefit when those trees bear.

Congrats on your success thus far.

The stress period in east texas is usually july through september

Seasonal rains seem adequate here otherwise

I plant my baby chestnuts in winter and look for well drained, north and east facing slopes

When would I apply the Moisture Mizer? I’m planting trees this winter. Would I apply when I plant? Some are bare root and some are potted, the ones in the picture above.

I only use Moisture Mizer when I plant in the final location in the field or woods. I never use it when I have a seedling in a pot. If the planting hole is 12 inches deep - I add the moisture mizer at the bottom and continue to add it as I work my way upward toward the ground level backfilling the dirt around the tree ball. I like to add it by holding it between and thumb and index finger. Guess that would be called the pinch method.

The first time I spill some on the ground one day, the next time I was in that area after a rain, it looked like a science fiction set - what a glob on the ground. Slowly that moisture collected by the crystals will be released back into the soil. Just a great product.

I hope my reply clears this up for you. Get back with me if I missed something.

So as you backfill the hole your adding a pinch at each level? Finishing with a pinch at ground level then topping with tree mat or landscape fabric?

That is what gives the tree a huge advantage. Yep Mitch - that with a tree tube is how I do it.
