Bo’s Hideaway

Well after some playing with it I got this “new” 50$ swisher trim n mow running and went by the hideaway to run it around the trees I have planted in the front. Let’s just say that I don’t think they have ever looked this clean around them. Definitely satisfied with the 50$ spent!

And me and dad started the process of getting our stands hung after some maintenance. The three in my piece are now up. We went up the county to a piece on the hunt club and hung a few too. We were hanging the last one of the day, and dad was up in this one when we heard a weird noise, so he finished what he was doing and went to get down and noticed one of the two support cables had broken… thank god the other one held. He was up there another 10-15 min after we heard the noise.

Very glad he got down safely, spending so much time in the air a good portion of the year always makes me nervous.

Haven’t posted in a while, I blew up the tractor bushhogging hunt club roads and paths. Original head gasket on the 58’ ford diesel finally gave up. Found a guy to fix it and my dad arranged for him to have it repainted while he had it. Big surprise for me.

And this deer here finally gave me some fresh pictures last night, giving me hope that maybe he’s going to give us a chance this year. 5th year of pics and this is the first time I’ve ever had pics of him this late. Usually the last pic of him is the first week of September. He showed up again last night and that’s never happened in the 5 yrs I’ve been trying to kill him. Last pic of him before last night was the 28th of august.

Well hunting season is in so the habitat work has stopped for the time being. I did order the nativ nurseries whitetail oak package. I planted all 12 of these trees in the front just to have some variety where the house is going to be. It consisted of 2 each of swamp chestnut, nuttall, shumard, white, willow, and cherrybark oaks. I have had a successful bow season so far. I’ve had a wide 9 and the big one on camera sporadically and killed this deer at last light the first week. I thought it was the 9 but it wasn’t. Oh well mistakes happen.

I had an encounter with the big one at last light two evenings ago. I was watching 5-6 does in the food plot when I saw a body come out on the right side. I knew immediately which deer it was just by the sheer body size even though I couldn’t see his head at that point. He pushed a doe around and gets to 52 yards. The camera took this picture while I was looking at him.

Atleast he’s still around, I guess the clover that is almost knee deep is holding him. I am very happy with how this foodplot turned out. I am unsure if I will continue to leave the taller strips throughout but it was an idea. I’m open to thoughts on whether to leave the strips next year or just make it straight clover. It does make it hard to see the deer at times.

I’m always a fan of breaking up plots and cutting down the line of sight. The deer feel more secure and the bucks will spend more time scent checking the field during the rut.

Sitting up here this evening waiting on prime time, looking over my plot thinking about how far this place has come in two years. Must say I am happy with how the clover and chicory came out this year. Already looking forward to improving it some more.

My time has been severely limited as of late because of my work schedule. Guy I work with had to go out for a total knee replacement putting me on 12 hours, but I found a little bit of time to get down to the land and do a little bit today.

Started by pruning some fruit trees and removing some suckers on them and the few chestnuts I have planted. First time pruning so open to suggestions.

I was unsure of what to do with this chestnut because of the structure at this point.

And these two year old sawtooths also have me wondering what to do… I have good growth but I am not sure whether to prune them or let them go.

And I also went and looked at a place to put in a potentially quarter to half acre kill plot that would be 300 yards from my main plot. The pictures of the are are from a video but I’m trying to show
what I will be dealing with to get it in and I’m wondering if it will be worth it. Open to thoughts there as well.

I also put a knew eva foam floor in the bottom of the blind, picked them up at a yard sale for 50c

My time has been extremely limited, but yesterday I got out for the 2.5 hours before dark after work. To put in this new food plot, I would have to cut a path around the western side of the property. I had stopped the path at my
Last ladder stand and this new “micro” plot is going to be about 150 yards or so past this stand. I got the path cut almost all the way to it yesterday.

Not too bad for 2.5 hours of work. I’m gonna try to start cutting in the plot over the next few days in the afternoons.

Also I have been wanting to upgrade some of the ladders both here and up at the club, so I jumped on three of these a few days ago at the local Walmart.

And my clover blend has come in finally, now I’m just waiting on the chicory to come in and I will try to get that seed in the ground.

Well not much of an update but, got back in there to work on clearing the new little kill plot, goal here is to pull deer out of my cutover and the neighbors cutover to the north. Still got some work to do but it’s only gonna be about a quarter of an acre. Thinking winter rye or oats in this little small plot unless I can get clover established in it. The neighbors cutover is the daylight you see behind it, and there is only one tree I can put a stand in to hunt it but it will be good for two different wind directions.

It’s getting closer to being at full size, just chipping away at it for 1-2 hours when I get a chance.

So last year I got some American plum seedlings from nativ nurseries and put them in pots. Only one of them really did any noticeable growing but I took them out yesterday and planted all 4 of them. I am hoping these will grow in a tight cluster on this edge and produce some fruit. Hopefully all 4 make it. We will see I guess.

I also planted some nwsg plugs on the edge of the main food plot. Guess I will see what happens there as well.
