On a side note, Catalpa worms are fantastic for fishing, especially catfish. Collect them and freeze them. You can use at later dates.

My folks had a catalpa tree in their yard. Its still there. We used to get the worms and freeze bag fulls. They are not as durable after they are frozen but they are as good as any grasshopper for catfish and gills. I doubt deer would eat many of the pods but I'd bet that the pods are better than cedar or winged elm.

In my experience, the only thing that wants to eat off a catalpa tree is a catalpa worm, this might point to the plants poisonous nature.
