2019 corn planting

This year was a lot different than last year. See last years thread here:

My cover crop this year was a bust. My rye did not do well because I planted it too deep and we got tons of rain. I ended up replanting with winter wheat the day after Christmas.

Because I didn’t have much biomass to plant into, I terminated the cover crop early this year. Soil conditions were perfect this weekend, so out came the planter. I used the row cleaners this year which is why the field looks strip tilled.

Yes, they are very adjustable. They were actually fairly shallow this year, but I wanted to try them as a pseudo strip-till. It’s sort of an optical illusion in the pictures...not much soil was moved. Every year is an experiment.

I had a planter identical to that one, one of the few things that I regret selling. Our corn planting in PA is a month off yet.

JD 7000 no till, with dry fert box.

It’s a cut down JD 7100 (which is the 3pt hitch version of the 7000). I’ve tweaked it every year. This year I added the extension to the fertilizer box so I wouldn’t have to stop to fill up so often:

I’ve also changed the stock closing wheel pressure spring system, down pressure springs, and added the martin row cleaners. I wish I got to use the planter more than one day a year!

What Fert are you putting down with it? Do you put any other fert down, or does that hold you?

Based on soil test on these fields - 400lb/acre of 15-0-15 2x2 at planting then I top dress with 300 lb of 34-0-0 when the plant is about 1-2 feet tall.

Sounds like a good plan. I just got a 7000 6 x 30 with dry fert. Going to do some experimentation this year.

It does look out of row, doesn’t it? I hate those chains... I always screw them up backing up.

They weren’t necessary this year, but they don’t hurt anything if not needed. I’ll make sure to fix it for next year.

Cutman, you need to make some cheap row markers so I can add them to my planter and drill LOL I did get bean meters for mine this year.

Yep. I like those.

It’s coming along. It needs to find the nitrogen sitting 2” away from each row. Weed control is a PITA this year with the failed cover crop not providing the protection that the rye provided last year.
