Merle Hawggard sent me several varities of limbertwigs back in February and I grafted them up as soon as my rootstocks got here in late March. This is a picture of one (Brushy Mtn Limbertwig) today. All of them are growing good, this is just the best one right now. I also have some Horse grafted as well, and some top secret variety from Missouri. All are doing well. I'll post up more as the spring progresses.

They look awesome! Greyphase was kind enough to share some of his limbertwig with me so I was able to add some of his with the ones I had for you.
I always get anxious till I see them pushing out new growth.
You've done a great job with those!

I pretty sure I've got takes on Ashford's limbertwig, Weaver's red sweet limbertwig, red Royal limbertwig, white limbertwig, black limbertwig, and Myer's green limbertwig.

Possible are watt's limbertwig and dula's beauty which is a limbertwig seedling.

Merle grafted several varieties though I can't remember them all. I know he grafted brushy mountain limbertwig, caney fork limbertwig, Victoria limbertwig, and kinnairds choice which is another limbertwig seedling.

He sent me five varieties--brushy mtn, victoria, arkansas charm, and caney fork are ones I remember. Can't remember the fifth.

Is there something about limbertwigs that make them special for you guys? I have 5 royal l'twig trees, but they have not bloomed much yet.

Normally have a lot of disease resistance especially black limbertwig, and grow well in hotter climates

I have grown a few different limbertwigs long enough to have some experience with them. Black LT is in the upper echelon of all apples I've ever seen. It has incredible DR and just makes crop after crop, year after year. I had two good trees that had to be moved with a backhoe due to the new road. That set them back but they are recovering and loaded with blooms this year.

My Myer's Royal and Caney Fork have given small crops so far, but both are loaded with blooms and have set lots of fruit this year. Both have good levels of DR. I'm anxious to see what the year brings with them.

Brushy Mountain is one of those apples that will show lots of fireblight but seems to grow so vigorously that it overcomes it. I almost top worked mine once but glad I waited. It had a massive crop of apples last year. This year it has only a few blooms, so I guess it may be catching its breath after that bumper crop. I would recommend not letting this cultivar fruit at a really young age and get some size on it first due to it getting shoot blight via the flowers.

My Old Fashioned LT is young and just started blooming last year. It has a few this year. I have a good feeling about this one based on what I've seen so far. It reminds me of Black LT. So far I see nothing affecting it at all. It just needs some time.

Good feedback, Native. Much appreciated. Thanks all who have contributed to this thread.

I have lost five of my grafts due to the rootstock dying. A couple were already taking off then just wilted and died. Thinking it was a bad graft I left the rootstocks in the pots to see if they would grow for grafting next year. After not seeing any growth for a couple weeks I did the thumbnail bark scratch test and bark was brown not green. These were from Cummins and had the same issue two years ago. I was ten for ten with rootstocks from Fedco last year. I'm wondering it isn't a climate issue. Of course, the other five are doing well.

I had some root stock deaths as well last year. I attributed my failed grafts to poor union, poor scion, etc.. Only to dig up the root stock at a later time and find that it was dead.... no new root growth. I had to plant into very muddy conditions last year and I wonder if that didnt contribute to some root stock deaths?

I had one from burnt ridge do that last year, but every one of my fedco rootstocks have grown well this year.

Update to my 2017 grafts. Didn't graft a huge amount but was able to get 100% to take this year. Grafted several limbertwigs some that I've never heard of that I got as extras in my order.

One tree I grafted I didn't believe was going to take because after bud break the leaves shriveled up. They did remain green but it wasn't growing. I left a nurse branch from the rootstock and around a week ago it started growing.

One thing we do I haven't seen anyone else do is bag the graft union, and for us it seems to be increasing are successes vs failures.
