    Drought and Survival

First freeze coming to southwest Kansas tonight and it could be a hard one in low lying areas. This will change to color of the area that has remained an unusual green this year due to abundant and well spaced rainfall. There was a quick shower in the wee hours this morning to bring my rainfall...

    Drought and Survival

Before I went to my friend's ranch, I checked out my food plot of radishes, turnips and chicory. Water pooling from last night's rain. I have planted radishes and turnips off and on for a number of years and the whitetail have never paid much attention to them. Chicory, on the other hand, once...

    Drought and Survival

The rain continues. I am up to 30" for the year, verses 17.50" average annual. My friend asked me to check his pasture again since he is out of town. Traveled to his place and dumped 1.50" from his gauge. Took another picture in a similar place that I did last month over there. That draw is...

twenty years ago I planted short maturity corn on some dryland bottom ground. It made 88 bu. The following spring there was good moisture so I decided to continuous crop that ground and planted the same hybrid and it made 105 bu/A. That was the last dryland corn I planted, not because I wasn't...

Light rain at the Ponderosa now. Any of you that have been in SW Kansas in August know that green is a color of the irrigated corn fields or the John Deere machinery in the fields. Normal pasture color would be khaki or the color of a manila folder. Not this year. We have been blessed with...

    Tough Equipment Day!

My father always said, "If it's not the windmill, it's the hogs". Story of my days frequently and it is the current state of affairs here at the Ponderosa. I hope better days are ahead for you.

    Drought and Survival

Thought I would update this post. There have been continued rains and this country is an unusual shade for August. My YTD total today is 22.10" after the last 2.35" downpour on August 11th. My CRP in places is approaching eight foot tall with most thigh high. I got my food plots planted a month...

Deer walking through clover to eat ragweed.

I manage for birds(pheasant, quail, pheasant, lesser prairie chicken, Rio turkey) and deer. I am pleased when I see ragweed.

    Attractant for Camera survey

Not a usual color for July in SW Kansas. I have been blessed with unusual spring rains. I have not yet gotten my cameras set up to census the bucks, but hope to get some free time soon and see what we have.

    Attractant for Camera survey

I was just in an home improvement store picking up some lumber and strolled over to their tiny and I mean tiny deer items and lo and behold there was Rice Bran, discounted at $3.50 a bag. Purchased the two they had and will give it a try.

Wheat streak mosaic hit hard in much of SW Kansas. I had one dryland field that was totaled out. Two dryland fields that had it but it was cutable, although very poor, 50# test weight and big dock at the elevator. The irrigated field made 70 bu. with 60# test weight.
