Bill, You should have success growing your DCOs in the Metro Mix 853 media. It's high in composted pine bark content (50-60%), close to the Fafard mix I mostly use (53-63% pine bark). Good luck!

Use a 4 ft. shop light, just to clarify. That's the cheapest lighting fixture to set up.

Sorry to tell you but I have seen it many times that deer chewed on them. To be safe you might want to put some deer repellent on it periodically.
