Butternut/white walnut

Has anyone had any luck growing Butternut/white walnut? I have a buddy with a beautiful Butternut tree, and I love to add diversity to my property. I pick up a bag of the nuts that are dropping, and drove the nut into the ground with the heel of my boot and flagged their locations. I might put a tree tube over the nuts the next time up. But wanted to know how hard they are to grow?

My grandpa planted Butternuts from seed successfully 20+ years ago. I don’t have first hand experience but i don’t recall him having much difficulty with it.

great to know! They are pretty rare in MN, so I would love to see a few grow. Any memory on how your grandfather got the seeds started: direct seed or started in pots or garden and then transplanted?

Just know they’re prolific nut producers so I’d definitely avoid planting in an area you mow.
