Not sure what this is. Was growing on a blackjack Oak. Also has poison ivy growing up through it. Is it edible?

I’d be careful unless you are for sure. I am in no way an expert on identifying these things.

It looks like it's in the polypore family to me. I'll have to dig out the book. I've been collecting edible mushrooms most of my adult life. I'll say I would not eat it until I saw someone else eat it and they were alive the next day. My guess , not poison, but not desirable. I've seen it in the woods. Hard as a hockey puck? There are too many easy to identify shroons to that are delightful to eat than to go after the questionable. Picked a chicken of the woods last night.(sulphur polypore).

LoL, you are pretty much right on with what I've read. I do love mushrooms and i'm keeping my eye open for more but I aint taking any chances.

Not sure if it’s the same type but I was at a craft show and a local artist had etched art scenes on the undersides of these. I was pretty impressed with the quality.

Yeah they are called an Artist Conk because of that. Its pretty cool, artist draw on them , and when they dry they are hard and the drawing is permanent. And it looks kind of primitive.
