Live from the stand 2017

Saw a bobcat hunting mice in a ditch and 6 deer very late. It was too dark and they were too far away. The season is winding down and I need to shoot lots of does.

Not live, but I hunted at home this morning. I saw one doe (possibly a button buck) very early, and a yearling four point that had a bum right leg. Looked like his knee was swollen, possibly from fighting. I could see no wound, but his hocks were very black and I imagine he got amorous with the wrong female, one with an escort. This sexual harassment thing has gotten out of hand !

We aren't seeing much in mornings and having a hard time getting them to feed before dark in evening with 50-60 temps

We were high 30s this afternoon and area not hunted recently so I had my hopes up that we would see movement. So glad when the boys spotted some. My seat in back corner of shooting house did not have a good view of them. We almost tried a double shot but deer would not broadside at same time and I did not want to miss a chance.

image.jpeg This morning was frosty in ETexas ! Good thing I had my trusty Coleman heater. I thought maybe a pig or coyote would show this morning, but only two does. I'm tagged out for bucks and can't shoot a doe until muzzy season so it's vermin only for a few days. Beautiful morning to be in the woods !

Got on stand late this evening. Sits below ridge and btweeen 2 bedding areas. West wind and snow melted off south slopes. We are in 3rd day of one of multiple gun doe seasons. Jst finished 2 wks rifle and wk of ML. I didn’t expect to see much. Hour before dark had 12 doe and 4 buck under me. Would’ve shot a 8 pt standing at 15 yds but he kept looking up to ridge from where he came. Had a feeling... and sure enough a 10 worked his way down thru thick stuff behind me at 30 yds. No shot as past my self made limit w recurve. Fun hunt. They were spooky.
Look close and you can see my shadow on ground standing on stand. 2 wks and another doe season left. Bet I’m eating my buck tag this yr. Bummer

Got a doe. 4 came out late, but there was enough light for me to see. I shot the biggest one but could find so sign of blood or a hit.

I grid searched for half an hour and still no luck. Not one drop of blood or hair anywhere. After a total of 45 minutes I stumbled onto her. Glad I didn’t stop looking.

125 lb.

It was stumble find for the one my grandson shot. No blood whatsoever, and here I am trying to teach them how to track. Just glad we found her

You did teach them. You taught them not to give up until you exhausted every reasonable possibility. Good job to you too !

Heck yeah, best lesson possible! Anyone can follow an easy blood trail. Makes me sick when I hear grown adults admit to moving on after looking for blood for a few minutes and not finding any.

Finally got my 8 year old out of the house and into the woods. We're sitting on a food plot that I named after him because when he was 2 and he would ride the 4-wheeler with me he always wanted to go up here and play in the tall grass (food plot). This spot like so many others have yet to have a deer taken from it (by choice). We are shooting hos 7mm-08 with some custom hand loads that revolve around a 175gr. Hornady GLX bullet. Yes I said 175gr.

Well. It was a great hunt for a kid. Sat a total of a hour and a half. Squirrels came out first, which is great practice for a kid to follow in his scope. Squirrels scattered so I told him to be on the lookout for a predator. Sure enough a bobcat came through. Squirrels came back out. First deer showed up right before last legal light. He was holding out for a buck. Doe ran off when a coyote came into the plot. Made a little racket trying to swap guns. No shot on the coyote. Sat back. Another doe come running through the plot with a good 2 year old chasing her. Way past legal light. Didn't stop my neighbor on the south end of my place from shooting. It was fun and we both left with a smile

When does your legal shooting light end? It’s a half hour after sunset here and I don’t think I could see a deer in a field at that point unless there’s snow
