Hope you've all been enjoying Christmas day. I had my youngest son and his bunch over today. Since we get the traditional Christmas meal at several other places I always make breakfast, sausage, bacon, biscuits, eggs, and my world famous chocolate gravy.
After watching a host of grandkids play, we found time for a rabbit hunt with the beagles. Shot 4 then just enjoyed watching the girls run.
Amelia seemed to think she deserved one for Christmas dinner though.

Finally had a chance to get a few of my trees planted out. Got the first 2 Tull trees planted, but mostly worked on our pears since they'll wake up first. Hope I get some more good planting weather later this week.

A few grafts from this year, prok persimmon, multiple pears, and a host of gold rush apples growing.
Hit the pond with Chuck for the first time this year. He's been working, in school or clinicals for what seems like 3 years!

Grafts look great. You put in a lot of work on those trees and it shows. Always like how you mix in fun with the work on your place as it should be. Congrats on the graduation and of course the fish. Both are a group effort and both of you should be proud as I'm sure you are.

I've got roughly half still living. Even with the protection some were raided by voles and such and I had one that ended up being home to what must be a very small ground nesting bird, but I have several nice ones growing.
I'll try and get a pic of the best ones the next chance I get.
My largest from 09 nuts is still doing great with no new blight cankers yet.

Here is my largest ACCF chestnut as of last week. I don't think I'll have blooms, but then there's nothing around to pollinate it anyway. I planted several of the bottle chestnuts around it last year and it has a sister tree 20' away that was top killed by blight in 2011. Miss Lucille suggested cutting it down to let the sprout have another chance. It's about 6.5' tall now.

Another odd thing found in the woods. Bucks are chasing. I've saw several, but none that spoke to me.
Chuck had one give him a lecture this morning, but no clear shot.

Back at work after a great weekend. Chuck and I saw several, but the only deer to be had this time was found in my deer cabbage stew.
There aren't many things more enjoyable than being at the farm discussing plans for the future and the hunt in the morning with family or friends.
Our gun hunt opens again next Saturday, maybe Chuck will see his target buck again.

A little update on what's going on in my part of the globe.
I made my first chestnut graft this spring and it's growing great. Luvalle's Monster, supposed to be similar to Dunstan.
I should have a decent crop of apples this year. I'll get to try a few Wilson June apples, a very obscure Arkansas variety, this summer for the first time as well.

Thanks Lak! Don't get discouraged by the failed pears either. I had to regraft some walnuts I did a few years ago this spring because I was so positive my summer buds would take I didn't cut any dormant scions that winter as a backup.
Live and learn lol!
Btw, thinking of summer budding, I've been 100%, on an amateur scale of course, on t-buds made in August on apples and pears. You may want to look into that method.

The walnut and pecan grafts are starting to push.
I made several mulberry grafts last week, they're swelling, but to early to tell.
The green milkweed is a pollinator magnet for me here.
I've been trying to protect the wild milkweed I have and adding a few others that are native for pollinators and monarchs.
When I was a kid they'd gather by the thousands on their way to Mexico, but only a few each year now in my area.
I do what I can.
