2019 Live from the Stand

22E91E12-BAA3-4143-8347-61FAE7F795A3.jpeg Back on my lease rifle stand this morning. Plenty foggy early but it’s burning off now. I’ve been having hell getting the right wind for two sits in row to hunt this stand and true to form for this season, looks like the morning is all I’m gonna be able to hunt.

I left my nest at 11:00 this morning. I didn’t see squat. I don’t know what’s happened to this spot, but it isn’t what it used to be. Since I was already there, I pulled my cards and almost nothing showing in daylight and very little action in the wheat even at night. It’s a head scratcher ! :(

We Didn't see anything either. This guy was about 300 yards from my dad this morning.

I scored a doe this morning about 0645. Had a big one in front of me in a plot at first light but I had a sneaky suspicion that she was the one in the area with twin fawns.....the fawns came out running 30 minutes later. Had two other adult does come into the other plot in this setup. It was a little windy, so they ran to the lee side of the plot and started feeding. They worked their way to just under 100 yds and I sent a 130gr Corelokt into the exit shoulder of the biggest one. She shuddered, then bulldozered, then ran into the thick. Found lung at the site at the site of the shot and followed the blood to the plot edge, but couldn't see her anywhere in the thick. Got about 30 yds off of the plot and she was piled up. How she even left the site of the shot I don't know because I shocked the close lung and blew out the opposing shoulder. Florida deer are just tough! Weighed in at 102# which is big for our area and I estimate over 6 years old. She'll be smoked links and pan sausage by Tuesday according to my processor. My leasemate killed a coyote stalking turkeys in his plot. A good December gun opener in Florida!

Had 3 nice does come across the clear cut and make a beeline for the swamp. Took a shot as the first one stepped into the road. She hopped and scooted down the hill. I thought she was done. I was wrong. Tracked her for half a mile through the swamp finding blood but she never stopped. Eventually the blood turned watery and stopped all together. Then my spot light ran out of batteries. All I had to find my way out was a red head lamp. It was fun. Hopefully she lived. On the plus side my euro mount on my buck was done.

lak - I remember like yesterday, (3 years ago now), when I let Jaden do his 1st sit by himself. It was a short ladder stand and I sat in a chair about 20 yds away and watched him climb and sit for the afternoon. He was 12 at the time. A hunt he nor I will ever forget. He just turned 16 and is not the lil feller he was just what seems like yesterday. For a grandparent, there's something a bit melancholy about watching grandkids go from lil ones to little adults in what seems to be such a short, short period of time. So glad we have a 4 yr old coming along behind him so we can experience it all over again as he grows. Now if I could just get Brooks to step up to the plate now that he's married and start throwing out a grand pup or two. Not sure that will ever happen.

I didn’t get a chance to take any live from the stand pictures this evening. I had a buck walk by while my bow and pack were still on the ground then this doe walked into a shooting lane seconds after I had my bow up. Fastest Axis deer hunt to date! Quick 2 day hunt, glad to make good on the first nights opportunity.

Congrats weekender. Nice job.
Jack and I did not take a shot but had deer all around yesterday pm. He was waiting on the buck to show up and "had the best hunt ever". It is neat to be right in the middle of them. Even poppa had to freeze to let a couple pass under ladder stand. It was fun.

Best line of the weekend. We stayed at my Moms old house. I went to bed first. Next morning jack says "I was watching TV, thought I heard a big truck stuck in the ditch but it was just you snoring!!"
