2019 Live from the Stand

If the right doe comes through it won’t matter..at least that is what I am telling myself sitting near this plot...

That's what I have been thinking too. We ended up seeing some young bucks again right before dark and had several does all afternoon. The only sign of rutting I'm seeing so far is the scrape I mentioned being kept fresh. I haven't seen any chasing or anything else. Hoping it breaks loose soon.

Never saw a thing come to that plot at all...bust of an evening. Tomorrow may be a nonstarter for me as well because of the rain, cold, and 25-30 mph wind they are calling for and no shooting house...

Veterans' day is awesome here in southern Maryland. 42, wind barely blowing in the correct direction, and mostly sunny.
While I was walking to my spot this morning, I noticed a deer about 200 yards away. It was moving in and out of the tree line. I sat for a bit to see if it wanted to make its way toward me, but no such luck. I then continued to my normal spot.
I had been sitting for about 45 minutes, when the forest's tattletales went silent. I looked up from my phone (yeah, I'm that type of hunter), and saw a monster buck about 80 yards through the trees. He seemed to be making his way toward me, but then something spooked him and he ran off through the cornfield. About 30 seconds later a tiny fox popped out. I lol'd. That buck had to have at least 150 lbs on the fox. Are deer actually afraid of foxes?

Veterans Day 2019. Awoke to a light rain shower passing by, 55 degrees and light N wind. Checked weather and it had changed showing the heavier rain to be coming in after 9. I dressed warmly in layers and left the house at 5:15 am.

The shower had not made the leaves underfoot more quiet so I decided to just get to the stand next to the trail and sit it till I could see well enough to stalk my way to the stand I really wanted to be in. About 6 am I could hear the north wind approaching rapidly and I got slammed with a cold 20-25 mph wind. I waited until I could see about 50 yards and got down and slowly stalked to my current stand. It’s now 45 with a 25 mph wind and a mist. It will be 32 by noon and 22 late this evening with this heavy wind. No deer sighted as of yet...

Good luck today. We are having 49 mph winds this morning, freezing rain, and light snow. I would hunt from the ground today!

Well, the rain came...it’s 32 now and the wind is howling...in the house with a bunch of stuff in the dryer...lol

Well I wish I could post a live from the stand update but my plans all got messed up. I was going to go to a ground blind I have in a small island of white oak trees in my south plot. I even went by it on my way out yesterday morning to make sure it hadn’t blown away and tied it down even more securely. I didn’t hunt yesterday evening because we were at 22 degrees and 30 mph winds and the rain turned to freezing rain, sleet, and snow so I just watched the weather and it appeared the wind would let up before daylight and it would be 16 with light wind. I got up this morning and immediately realized they lied about the wind...it was still a steady 10 or so mph and 14 degrees.

I put on everything I own and stepped out onto our crunchy covered deck that the rain blew in sideways on and realized it wasn’t enough. I headed toward the blind and my first issue was my gate lock was and still is frozen so I had to crawl through the fence. I was just praying the buddy heater in the blind would still work. I had deer in the plot blowing and flagging as I arrived and by that time I didn’t care. I just wanted to get situated but wouldn’t you know it..all my zipper entries were frozen shut...at first I thought about untying all the tie downs, pulling the pins and crawling under it but by then I was so numb I just said to heck with this and crunched my way back home, took everything off and fell back into bed. As bad as I hate to say it I am going to have to add some kind of built shooting house to our place that a bow can be shot from...and I am gonna have to invest in a heater body suit for tree stands. It’s still 16 degrees and a 10 mph wind for a real feel of 4:confused:

I apologize for my comment yesterday Okie, you showed good sense this morning. Sixteen degrees ! Brrrrr !

I guess everything is relative, I endured a winter in ND where it didn’t get above 10 degrees from January 4th until about the last week of February and the nights were from 10 to 25 below, but I was 35 years old then. We couldn’t work because the ground was frozen to 5’ deep so I spent lots of time in my travel trailer. ;)

I guess I was unaware of any comment...was it on this thread? No worries...

I am going to get a cold evening sit in today and I am gonna be in a ladder and way down in the oaks...

It was in jest anyway. Good luck this afternoon, I’m gonna be in one of my rifle stands in the middle of my 80.

Now I am live from the stand...trail cam showed mature buck and doe in here less than 1 hour ago and my main target buck here late last night. Hoping this cold gets them feeding earlier this evening...

First deer at 3:37 pm. Small buck.

Well, live wasn’t very lively today. The one buck was all I saw except a coyote right at dark. He was on a mission I guess ‘cause he didn’t tarry long enough.....

Yesterday evening I watched two forked horns harass some does off and on for about an hour. Back in same stand this morning and just a button buck so far. Had a noisy walk in this morning with the froze crunchy oak leaves. Wind starting to pick up.

CCDB1FB4-EA0C-4DD7-9D7B-C640E78209FF.jpeg I’m back at it. Wind swapped directions on me so I changed stands. I’m on my NW corner looking S. No food plot or feeder but a little corn on the ground usually slows the deer or hogs enough to get a shot. Three hundred yards to the creek but only ten yards wide. Neighbor is on my right but I can’t see into his and he can’t see into mine.

Wow. Too much action this morning for my poor heart (just kidding). I was walking to my spot about 30 minutes before sunrise, and I catch these 3 bucks lollygagging in the corn field. I blew my load earlier this year on a couple tiny bucks, so I can't shoot any of them until firearms season starts at the end of the month.
So I'm sitting here watching them so like OK's bucks: eat, play fight, go back to eating, and so on. But while I'm watching them, I notice that they keep looking back into the woods that they popped out at. I hear some scraping, and watch the leaves shaking vigorously. Then I see the biggest buck I've ever seen in person. Yes, I'm still kicking myself for not waiting until now to take a buck. Lesson learned for next year. But in my defense, I took my first deer ever this season, so I couldn't care less what sex deer it was.
The Big buck had a doe in-tow. Now I'm back in the game. But I couldn't understand why the two were moving so slowly. Oh, about 10 minutes later I watched the big buck chase the others away from his doe. Finally the two made their way to the clearing where I had a possible shot. But they stayed at about 70 yards the whole time. Oh well. Tomorrow I'm going to try to get to a better position. And wake up earlier.
I finally made it to my spot, but I'm fairly certain I'm not going to see much until this afternoon. Luckily for me it's awesome weather here in Central Maryland. 50° and breezy. Not a cloud in the sky.

Now you see why you don't turn every deer you see into steaks!
