None of us older folk really ever like change, but that being said, I do like change in habitat management, although change keeps a good hunter on their toes, because any and every change in habitat, even a small one,, changes hunting patterns. The hunter who can adapt the quickest gets the big buck.
I say do it, and spend extra time analyzing the little clues in changes in deer movement before you set up to hunt the next season.

I got some change on my end of one of my leases, but not for the better, at least short term. It’s actually my son’s lease but I’m a member. They clearcut my whole end, which is about 50 acres. Of course it looks like a bomb went off but I knew what to expect. I figured that all the activity might let my food plot get a jump start though. WRONG ! The night shift evidently came on and it looks like a flat top haircut ! . That’s OK, I planted it for them to eat, I just wish I had more room to plant. I joined the lease just because my son asked me to, and I know I can kill a doe most any time as we have lots of them.

You may want to consider lowering your herd numbers? I guess in Tx with four seasons of summer there's no other planting that will outgrow the deer? In our area if someone is getting their food plot overrun with deer grazing it usually means they are growing the wrong crop. Here in Pa we can grow a combo of ladino clover and cereal rye that grows anytime there's no snow on the ground and will outgrow most deer grazing efforts for most of the year.

MM, my problem is not enough room to plant. These leases are both only there to grow timber, so we are limited to whatever space is open. At home, I have usually been able to somewhat keep up, but I feed protein too as a supplement. I have come to the conclusion that I cannot concoct a better food plot mix than what I can get from Green Cover and theirs doesn’t cost much more. Consequently, I will be using their blends going forward. They still won’t last all summer, because it stills get hot and dry no matter what you plant, but they will be better for longer.

I’ve not posted much lately but have been doing lots of work outside. I have cleaned up storm debris and trimmed all my roads. I also have my field mowing finished, and I’m close to having shooting lanes cleared.

This is a good fruit year. Most all my trees are loaded up. I believe the deer below is the old mainframe 8 I’ve passed the last 3 years. Just shows that age can change things.








My plan to get rich from this big walnut went to pieces when it turned out to be hollow.

You're way ahead of us with fruit here in Pa. Things look good there, Native. What else is in that plot with the clover & rye? Sorry about the walnut log, though. Could've been decent money.

Thanks Flatiron 75. The plot the deer is in has wheat, clover and alfalfa. That other plot has wheat, clover, and chicory. That little weed is a volunteer called Venus Looking Glass. It's a welcome addition, because deer do like it.

Native, there might still be enough wood in that walnut for several sets of handgun grips. If it has good burl there’s definitely a market for it. Even straight grain will sell. Us handgun aficionados (nuts) are goofy about nice handgun grips.

BTW, I need directions to your farm in case there’s ever a famine !
