Working at the Farm - Took a few I-Phone Pics

Did I miss something?? Did you get a new truck??? And I want see you and the Boy using the 2 man chain saw!!

One thing I forgot to tell you about that two man saw - back years ago when I became aware of it, I started talking to my dad about it. I said something about getting it to running again. He said, "I hope I never see that thing running again......" :)

The recent hinge cutting has brought in a new buck. This is coming out of the hinged area just before dark. Never saw this one before.

Much damage to your fruit trees?? Limbs and trees laying everywhere here. Good emergency food for the deer. Not sure how we have kept power. Stay safe.

The fruit trees here at home don't look damaged, but I do have limbs from shade trees laying all over my yard. I hope to be able to check some of the fruit trees at the farm later today. It has been bad here, but could have been so much worse.

Thanks for checking in dogghr, and I hope you stay safe too!

I'm worried about those white pines that the bucks enjoy so much.

I've immensely enjoyed the winter like weather that we have had as of late here in ky, which should start coming to an end today. I'm waiting for all of this weight to come down out of the trees before I venture back on to the ridge.

I hope that your forest is well. There were a lot of limbs coming down around here two days ago.

G, I was worried about those pines too. Finally today I got to check them out. I didn't see a single broken limb, but I have to feel like we were very close to a pine disaster:

The NWSG stood better than I thought they could. Below is mostly Big Blue and Indian. Switch was just a little better looking than these.

I was only finding a few deer tracks here and there. It didn't seem like enough for my farm. Then I walked to one of the plots:

So happy this is over and glad we are looking at temps in the 50s next week.

As I posted in another thread earlier today, my cousin and I had a wonderful morning by doubling on two KY toms.

We went into an area very early before daylight about 150 yards from where I felt the turkeys would be roosted. I had them coming toward me Saturday morning, but some hens walked in front of them and that was the end of the hunt. I figured the same thing would happen this morning, but they came off the roost and came literally running to my box call. We didn't see any hens today - just 4 big toms. It was what I would call "textbook" which doesn't happen much with me. I usually have to work much harder and longer....:)

Cousins bird: 23 lbs, 11 inch beard, both spurs 1 1/8 inches.
My bird: 22 1/4 lbs, 11 inch beard, one spur 1 inch and the other 1 1/8 inch.

Wet turkey pictures are never very good, but here they are anyway:

And this is our photographer - the only person in the community not still laying in bed....

Tomorrow morning I'm going after the Patterson-Gimlin Bird. Wish me luck.

Nice textbook double. Now my blood's flowing, PA opens May 1st, which is too late, but the state biologists say who are we to know that.

Well my turkey season is over after taking my second tom today. This is the one I had been hunting for two years and was the dominant bird on my place.

I didn't go out until about 1:00 PM in the afternoon and spotted him from my deer blind 300 yards away. He was with two hens and another tom that was laying down. Two more toms came up toward him and he immediately jumped them, and they took off like lightning.

I saw the two hens start moving slowly in the direction I was hoping they would go. I had a spot set up 80 yards from them. I came down out of the blind and made my way through a native grass field to get into position. They couldn't see me, and I couldn't see them. After I got to my spot I just waited. In 10 minutes the two hens passed me, but the tom was not behind them. I took out my box call and made 3 clucks and one soft yelp. In about 30 seconds I saw his head come up about 80 yards away and he was headed straight for me.

I got the gun in position and let him close to 38 yards. The rest is history. I fell really blessed to have such a great turkey season.

Beard = 12+ inches
Spurs = 1 was 1 1/4 and the other broken half off
Weight = 23.3 lbs
