Native...Do you use any herbicide to combat weeds in your chicory? If so which one?

My bears would have a field day in your fruit trees. Wish I didn't have them around because I would love to plant some fruit trees.

deer patch, I have used cleth a few times in the past for grass, but after a plot gets established, I generally will only spot spray with gly. The plot in my picture above is pretty weed free, but I do have another plot that has some foxtail and curly dock coming on. When my truck gets repaired, I will do some spot spraying there.

I do like WI chicory, and another one I like is Commander. It seems to me that the stalks on these two get bigger and stay tender for a longer time. I've had trail camera pics of deer taking 18 inches of the stalks out of the top of the plants in one bite. All of the other varieties of chicory that I've tried get eaten well, but I have been a little more pleased with the two mentioned.

Yes, bears are hard on fruit trees. There have been occasional bear sightings in my area of the state, but nothing like Eastern KY. I hope we never get a population of them here.

Your fruit tree production is past amazing. I thot I was loaded but nothing compared to yours. My acorns very heavy this year, hickory nuts less than usual. Nice bucks. Went to ck my camera card and battery been dead since June so I may have no horns perhaps.
Can you imagine the early settlers walking thru miles of thickets of native grass like you have on your place? Mustve been amazing.
With all this rain chicory is growing everywhere taller than I think ever seen. Deer east of Mississippi should be fat and sassy this year. Place great as usual, thanks for showing.

I think the little lady would be relieved if I bought another truck, because then she could borrow it all the time. I just hate to buy a new one for the way I will use it. A good used one would make a lot more sense for my purposes.

Yes, this is one of the best mast years I have ever seen. I didn't post any pics of sawtooth acorns, but mine are really loaded. I haven't paid much attention to the native oaks, but will try to check them next week when I'm over there.

Thanks for the info. I've tried to find Commander seed in the past with no luck, so WI it will be.

BTW....Don't pay any attention to Dogghr...he still can't think or see straight since his Dr. visit earlier this week. I don't think anyone ever told him that was an exit only.

Your farm is looking fruity. As far as mowing, I agree, don't mow if you don't have to. One exception is a good ladino clover plot, mowing in midsummer even when there's no weeds really rejuvenates the growth.
Buy a new pickup, not someone else's problems, because replacement time comes around too often as it is. Even if you scratch the fenders, what's underneath will be solid for a long time, and you won't have your excuse to us anymore that you can't take more driveby shooting pics for us because the pickups broke.

Good points on the ladino clover and pickup truck too. I would for sure buy a new one before buying a used on that had gone through a flood.

I'm not sure why it is so hard to find. The only place I sometimes still see it is in BOB mixes. I've been experimenting with some other varieties, but if nothing stands out as special, I will just buy WI at some point in the future. Really, it is hard to go wrong with any of the forage varieties I have tried, but as mentioned earlier, I do see some as better than others.

The problem with keeping forage chicory going is that the deer eat it so hard, the unpalatable weeds will eventually get an advantage over time. Yes, you can mow them both, but you are setting the chicory back as much as you are the weeds. For me, it is just easier to start all over every few years rather than try to spray weeds - although, I will do some spot spraying sometimes depending on what the plot looks like.

I think in a couple of years that the one eyed bandit could be dead of old age..........
