What to do with "dead" cams?

Ok - I'm sure I'm not the only one. I buy some pretty low end cams and if I get 2 years of use out of them I'm pretty happy. What do you all do with those that "die"? I have one that refuses to recognize the presence of the SD card...... I have another that the IR "flash" doesn't work any more - so no night pics. Not sure they are worth fixing, but I hate just tossing them out. Anyone out there recondition or use the cams for parts?
 
I would also either send in to see what they do or at least do an online firmware upgrade if they offer that.The only ones I trash without trying is flood victims
 
when you guys have decoy cameras, do you leave old batteries and SD card in them? If I was trespasser and opened it, I would know it was just a decoy camera if it didn't have those. If it did I would assume the batteries where dead when it didn't work.


I've had thought about putting a decoy on a gate of a driveway in a visible spot.
 
I like the "trade-in" idea.

I have been lucky thus far with theft issues so I don't have a use (knock on wood) for a decoy cam at the moment. But I can see where that would be a good use for them.
 
I have a Browning that the screen quit working. It still takes pictures fine, but you can't change any settings or the time/date. Pretty frustrating. Trade-in sounds like a dang good idea!
 
I have four that I still keep as decoys. I put them out with old, defunct SD cards and dead batteries in them. I caught one of the local kids stealing a camera a couple years ago by using a decoy. Since then, I have not lost a single camera but still put out the decoys every fall.
 
I usually put them in a box with my name and address, and a note saying that it quit working. You'd be surprised how many times you get a box in the mail with a new cam inside......

I sent a Moultrie back last spring. They shipped a brand new one back within a week. It was only a couple of months old when it broke though. I've never tried it with something more than a yr or two old.
 
I also use my old cameras as decoy camera's. I hang them in obvious sight and another not so obvious to catch the trespassing scum bags. Then if I can add a theft to their charges of what used to be a $500 camera we can get those charges bumped up to a felony and not have to worry about that guy again.
 
I offer a trade-in program. Trade in your camera, any make, whether it works or not.
I will pay between $30 and $70 USD for the trade. Put it against the purchase of a
new Spypoint trail camera. You pay the shipping one way.

Really? I guess I will have to look into what Spypoint has to offer, if I can;t get them replaced/repaired for a reasonable cost.
