Walking by a persimmon tree and noticed something odd. Stopped for a look and found these giant caterpillars all over it. Monsters from hell to me. They are doing a great job of converting leaves into fertilizer pellets...

DANG THOSE ARE COOL LOOKING! Now go kill them suckers!
Agreed! Got to make a raising cage of some sort first, my youngest wants to grow one into a butterfly. I don't even know how to kill a bug that big. I'm not very squeamish but the thought of these toads squishing underfoot is unappealing. I wonder what they taste like fried...

Could be a new KS delicacy! I would guess it is one of those big moths of some type. Good idea raising one..... you already know what they like to eat!:D

I got some of those on my persimmons last year. About freaked me out...

Kill that sucker or you won’t have a leaf on that tree...

Thanks for the info and advice guys. The 10 yr old boy has collected a bunch of them and plans on hatching them into butterfly's. I'm strongly guessing that at least a few of them get used as bait in the next day or two. It won't be too hard to convince him that there are too many in his cage for them to all hatch... and he likes to fish anyway. AR practice does sound like fun too though.

Doubt we eat any of them (but just so you know the boys were in on it).

I just read the little information slide that j-bird posted and it says that they eat privet. I wonder if you can move them from the persimmons to something you don't want and have them eat the bad stuff. I doubt the catepillars will travel long distances to get back to the persimmons. Move them to something you dont want and let them get after it.

I could put them on the million or so locust trees I battle on an endless basis!
