Fake Kieffers are as bad as Fake News........
I don't know about Ayers pollinating other pears but aren't Ayer's self-fertile?just was reading this article https://www.qdma.com/guide-planting-pears-deer/ it says in it that ayers pear wont pollinate other pear trees, this is news to me, anyone ever heard this before? I planned on adding a ayers to go with my kieffer.
IME, Kieffer have some of the worst growth habits out there. My Orient pears seem to have the best growth and also were the first to produce pears. I'm still waiting to get pears from my kieffers.
I don't have much experience b/c all of my trees got wiped out last year by frost but the Orients had pears the year before that which was the quickest of the 10 varieties that I planted. I'm headed to the farm tomorrow to show the property and will check out the orchard then but we have had some really cold nights recently and the trees were blooming weeks agoSeems my Kieffer pears get wiped out by late frost every year since 2011. Always have a few pears that make it but much of the fruit is wiped out by late frosts. Orient's are much later blooming. Kieffers are already in full leaf and the blooms got waxed with the cold snap a week or so ago. Orient's are just now budding out. Also have a Bartlett that is just budding. I'd love to hear from some of the guys that have Orients. How have they done for you?
