Because of near... drought like conditions in my area, I decided to put in some watering holes next to my plots. They're not much to look at. Hand dug with slate and concrete mix to sure them up. I have a 200 gallon water tank that I can back right up to the holes to fill. We finally got some rain last night and it looks like they're going to hold water. Will fill them completely tomorrow. Anyone else utilizing hand made watering spots? Interested in what's working the best.

I buried a plastic goldfish pond several years ago on my place that has turned into a nice little watering hole. I haven't run a camera over it in several years but I know that wildlife of all kinds are using it. I checked it in the spring and found salamanders, box turtles, and lots of deer tracks

I want to put in a couple of those. Short of burying a plastic tub how does a guy get a hole in the ground to not leak? Concrete?

I have used bentonite in the past for ponds. It is cheaper than a pond liner. I've also spread a bunch of straw into a leaky pond. When the straw sinks, it tends to plug the leaks.

I filled them... today. I must say I was quite surprised how well it went. Time will tell if the concrete will hold the water, or if I should've went with a liner.

I have tried to build two in the sandy loam soil of my place. Both leak and the hot weather empties them. I may try some stray or a liner.
 
Interesting about the straw. Has anyone else used straw successfully? Straw seems way cheaper than bentonite.
 
I suppose it's better than being dry but my hunting area is so swampy I don't need to think about watering pools. Maybe for the extra wet seasons I should build some deer bridges.:p
 
There is also lots of info on watering holes on the texasbowhunter forum. They've been at this watering deer business for a while.
 
I like to use the plastic kiddie pools you can buy at Walmart. Once they are filled they hold water for quite awhile and rainwater fills them back up. They are also easy to move around once emptied of water also.
 
Very nice Scatterlands ! I hope one day to have a water hole big enough to put a dock on too.
I see your from Wilford. Do you get any of the summer time crazies on that part of the Spring River ?
