Tree tubes, the good & the bad

Oklahoma was hit with the worst ice storm in its history in the last week of Oct. I went without electricity for 9 days in OKC and was scared that my seedlings, 80 miles away we’re going to be demolished. The tree damage to Post oak and Blackjack and ERC was incredible. But when I went to check out my little trees they were doing great. No problems at all. Still just as green and even the new growth was green. I was pleasantly surprised. No broken branches or mains.
So as much as i have complained about tree tubes and have made plans to remove all of them, I’ll have to say that they no doubt saved the day with this ice storm.
I’m still going to remove them though. That’s the worst storm In 116 years so I thing I’m good. Right ?
I did a comparison with some post oaks, in tubes and out. The trees in tubes were very flimsy and needed stakes until they were 5 ft tall. The ones with out tubes were 10 “ seedlings staked with old 31 inch 2216 arrows ...The stakes were removed 2-3 years ago and the difference in the caliper of the trunk is impressive. They did receive some ice damage too, but are in far better shape to recover than the tubed trees. This may not be the same with any other trees. I went with PO because they are native to this land and I’m hacking and squirting the junk trees and replacing them with what God had intended.
I also think grasshoppers and catapillers love the protection a tube provides.
Im using my old tubes , cutting the tubes in half and direct seeding into the shortend tubes. Once they are out of the tube the tube will be removed and the tree will be fenced and probably staked.

Thats way different than in my SC kansas.I put as many of my sawtooth and bur oaks in tubes and leave them until they almost touch the sides and cut them off and put a cage around them about 12 inches bigger than the trunk.Chestnuts seem to do ok tubed but I don't do fruit trees except persimmion.Glad you made it through through the ice storm

Sawtooth and bur oak are the 2 trees Ive had the best luck with, as far as tolerating the soil I’m dealing with and not getting drought stressed. Post oaks , once they are past 3 years they have been good too. I think part of my deal is I don’t have very many trees out of tubes in my new area I’m planting and I have to get out of the truck to look at each tree. The more trees I get the less time I have to check them and take care of them.

I don’t have any hate directed at tree tubes but bears and bucks have destroyed so many on my place I no longer consider them an option.

Pardon my ignorance with this question....My wife and I have apple tree's coming in to plant next to the house for us. Not for wildlife. I was planning on using tree-tubes. Is this the best route for protection? If no, what would you do?

I really like tubes for SWO, Chinks, Concordia, Persimmon, SBO, EO, Nuttall.
In western NY I’ve not liked tubes with Sawtooth or Chestnut. They tend to grow spindly. I let the tube break right out of the tube and protect them from buck rubs as long as possible.
SWO and Concordia are doing great in tubes here. I’m getting trees splitting the tubes every year now. Kind of like a birthday.

No

I tried tubes and 5’ wire cages. Go the cage route. Don’t forget window screen at the base. If you zoom in you can see the 5’ welded wire cage, t posts, 24” window screen, and bucket for collecting rain water. This method has been the best for me. Should be several threads on the forum showing the process. Kinda hard to see but I use 4’x4’ weed matts as well.
