Too Late for Crabs?

Kind of late to the ballgame fellas. Do any of you know any nurseries still selling and shipping good, late dropping crabapples for a somewhat reasonable price? Tall order I know, I’ll be ordering a crab tree package from wildlife group this fall for next year if I can’t find anything this late.
 
Also, Native, if you check out this thread. Would you recommend planting crabapples with the knuckle buried, so it will hopefully become bigger tree?
 
I'm sure you already know who I'll say to check with... Turkey Creek and I've heard good things about 37th Parallel.

I agree with catscratch on checking with Turkey Creek first. I also heard that even though Northern Whitetail Crabs shows out of stock that you can call them on the phone and may be able to get some. This is because of some people backing out of orders due to the virus. I would think that most northern nurseries are still shipping. Check with Wafler Nursery as well. I wish I could remember the name of that other Northern nursery that people like so well, but the name just currently slips my mind....I'm old....

For the last couple of years, I've been planting some trees with the graft below grade and others with the graft above grade. It will take time to see how this actually works. I will already say that the ones planted below grade are doing fine, and I hope they go ahead and make natural roots and get bigger. Ask me in 20 years....;)
 
Thanks fellas! I wasn’t sure Turkey Creek shipped Cat, I saw they were in Kansas and assumed you drove to them. For these recommendations, will I be able to get trees for around $25-30 and not get waylaid with shipping? The reason I ask is because wildlife group sells theirs for $25 a tree and a little cheaper if you get a bundle. I’ll plan on making some calls tomorrow.
 
One more question Cat, which root stock did you choose for your crabs from turkey creek?
 
Doing some research, blue hill has some good looking trees they are advertising as standard trees, they are on Malus Dolgo root stock. Are you guys familiar with that?

Yes, that means he is using Dolgo Crabapple as a rootstock. I'm getting the same thing from him this fall on a few trees. That should be a good choice.
 
Oh ya, I've never been to his nursery. Always have them shipped. I order however many fills a box.

Thank so much guys!! After calling several nurseries and hearing “sold out” repeatedly, I got ahold of Terry at Northern Whitetail Crabs. You guys were right, he had some trees left with orders falling through. I ordered: a crossbow, a 30-06, and a droptine. He even threw in an extra droptine with a broken branch he snipped off for free. They should be here by the end of the week.
 
Just got the 4 trees from Northern Whitetail Crab. They look great! Terry had described them as whips and even sent me an extra tree for free like I mentioned above; they don’t look like whips to me! He had me get them out of the box and put the roots in our little pond. I plan to get them in the ground on Thursday. I’ve never ordered trees this old from a nursery dedicated primarily to deer hunters, there is a big difference in appearance between these trees and others I’ve received from more traditional nurseries in the past. At this point, I couldn’t be more pleased.
 
We got the four trees in the ground yesterday in the farm barnyard, along with 16 American plums in one of the north running draws. We had to dig pretty big holes to accommodate the big root balls on the crabapples. We caged them and I put a good amount of limestone gravel around each. Hopefully it will keep the weeds knocked back and I can spray the gravel with glyphosate later for grass. I plan on putting a big handful of triple 12 in a week or two in the gravel and wetting it down some. Terry recommended doing that. I might try to get Catscratch to upload a pic for me if he has enough internet in the quarantine. Thanks again for all advice guys, it’s so nice to get a year head start!

The site won't let me post pics anymore... I just get a buffering signal for a while then it says nothing loaded. Sorry man. Your trees look good though! Good job planting them.
