I've had luck with coarse wood chips on top of asparagus too. The spears can push through it quite easily where grass has a much harder time.

Sounds like a good idea. Like I said the deer killed my young patch, going to look for more crowns soon to try again.

I have a stash of over 900 yards of wood chips which are used in my vegetable and flower gardens. At six inches thick they do hold back grasses some what but not completely. Four layers of newspapers under the wood chips holds back all grasses and weeds for a solid year.
