Rediscovered heritage apples

Our Arkansas Beauty scions came from David.
I'm pulling for him to find Elkhorn.
An old Arkansas orchardist, Col E F Babcock moved to Oregon for the better growing conditions there taking, I'm sure, many of the old southern varieties with him.
A lot of the old obscure Arkansas apples are listed in turn of the century Oregon nursery catalogs from the early 1900's.

That’s awesome Merle. Please update this thread with any new info that you discover.

Pretty cool article. There are heritage apples all over the countryside in western NC. I imagine Big Horse Creek Farm has a pretty good handle on all those located in our area. They are big on heritage varieties.

Yes, I have several trees from Big Horse. They have a good selection.

The family-operated orchards have supplied the public with historic apple varieties for over 60 years. Some of the orchards' trees were planted in the late nineteenth century and significant additional plantings were made during the Great Depression by the orchards current owners. The orchards cover 16 acres with more than 700 trees and over 100 varieties with dates varying from the Calville Blanc d'Hiver (1598), Gravenstien (1600) to the Wolf River (1881) and Pink Pearl (1944). Weston's Orchards work to conserve these antique apple vaieties from extinction. The Old Church apple, for example, is grown solely on their farm.
