Porcupine eating pears

Sunday I was out picking up pears on the ground before mowing. I looked up in the tree to see how may pears remained on the tree. High up in the branches was a juvinile porcupine eating a pear. I had no idea that porcupines ate fruits. Learn something new every day.

Most small mammals eat some fruit, most omnivores like foxes and coons eat fruit. Possums, skunks, etc all eat fruit. And of course porcupines, which are actually herbivores like mice, rabbits, squirrels, eat only fruit, berries, leaves, buds, nuts and bark.
If you are picking up pears you are lucky enough to have a good source of deer food available...

My pear trees on my hunting property bore fruit for the first time this fall. U the pears are small probably due to our drought conditions. This pear tree is at my house and the pears are sparse but larger than softballs.

No bears? I had several pear trees totally wrecked by bears...
