This is a review of the PLANTMATES 76300 bag seeder. I give this $46.95 piece of junk 0 stars, do not buy.
After using lightly twice for several lbs of clover each time, by the third use the gears started jumping, so I worked on this junker for an hour, adding shims to no avail.
I decided that this thing was possibly designed by mickey mouse, plastic and white metal being their materials of choice. I threw the equivalent of an hour and two $20 bills into dumpster. End of story.20250910_175855.jpg20250910_175501.jpg20250910_175416.jpg20250910_175909.jpg

I'm not at the farm right now where the Solo is, but here is a pic from the internet. Mine looks just like it.

I've tried several. The big red earth way works, but the back strap is terrible. It will spread the biggest seeds.

The Solo is good. Easy adjustments..simple over shoulder strap. It spread rye and oats two weekends ago.

I also have the Hooyman. It has the best mounting system. Put a vest like harness on, and the attach clips to it. There's also a peg that slides into a groove. The only complaint I had was spreading oats with it. The seed was just a little too big for the openings, and came out too slow. Had to revert to the Earth way. It also will allow you to spread small seeds very well. Easy adjustments. It lays flat to fill, which is nice.

I have to say that I rarely use the Solo any more. Most of my mixes included Winter Rye which is a great carrier for small seed even for PTT. I mix my seed in the hopper and make one pass around to make sure everything gets covered. I go fast enough that I always have seed left in the hopper and I zig-zag around the plot till it is gone. I don't really have issues with seed distribution. Mine does have an agitator.

While I could probably use the exercise that comes with the Solo, I am generally short on time at this time of year. Last week I sprayed, broadcast, and cultipacked here at the retirement property. We have had a very dry September and I was waiting for rain in the forecast. I finally was running out of time, so I sprayed about 5 acres at the farm on Monday, and broadcast and cultipacked yesterday. They were only calling for a 50% chance of rain yesterday and today with a 0.01 accumulation. Fortunately they were wrong. It spit at me off an on yesterday as I planted. As I was leaving it picked up to a light drizzle. I checked today and we got between .25 and .50 inches yesterday and it has been raining on and off all day today. I had planned to go work on stands be decided not to after looking at the radar.

Regardless of what approach or equipment you use, timely rain can cover a lot of sins!
