Oklahoma Frost Seed Clover

Hey guys,

I have 2 food plots that I am wanting to transition over to clover and looking for thoughts on frost seeding in Northeast Oklahoma? Obviously this will just be to get something growing this spring, and will then also overseed again in the fall with more clover. I guess my questions on the frost seeding are whether it would work in Oklahoma, or if I would be better off just planning to disc and plant in the spring since we may or may not get winter weather.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

frost seed red clover every late winter here in Central Oklahoma. Works great! Usually first of March is when I frost seed.

Thanks dogdoc. Do you work the ground at all before seeding or just let the weather do the work?
Now that depends on what I'm broadcasting into. All of my frost seeding is done into existing plots. I would not start a new plot by frost seeding.

Should work fine in existing plots. I usually frost seed in late February.

We doze plots into the woods in January and February and I immediately throw my clover seed down on it and have had some great plots!

I am anxious to see if my fall planted clover in the LC mix will be thick enough. I can see some, but not as much as i expected. Im afraid some of it was lost to the dry conditions. I will probably frost seed for insurance.
Maybe it will magically appear come April next year?

The LC mix clover is always deceiving when all of the other stuff is in there. You'll probably be surprised.

Do as said and just frost seed sometime in march a RC and WC mix. Just allow the WW to go its route and by next fall you will have a decent clover plot. You might want to spray cleth late next summer to kill the grasses, but the clover will do fine. Don't worry of having a immaculate monoculture plot. Let it mix up with everything from WR, WW, brassica. Ck your soil tests. Good luck.

When is typical to frost seed in northern climes? March? April?

I think it may vary by year. You want above freezing temps during the day, and below freezing temps during the night. Hopefully the snow is gone as well, but I did seed over some snow one year.
