oaks and dogwoods

I've noticed in the past year or so that I have quite a few dogwood trees growing right at the base of an oak tree. When I say at the base I mean touching one another. The oaks are always much older. I'm curious if this is just happenstance or if there is some sort of symbiotic relationship that is beneficial to both trees.
Has anyone else ever noticed this ?

It's where squirrels or birds crap out the seeds. Or either squirrels bury them and forget where they put them.
