Boy, I remember those days. But we used a green stick as opposed to metal gambrels. Only the rich guys had those.

Now you have me worried. I was thinking the 6 inch dimension going fore/aft with 4 feet in the ground would be stiff enough. Was also thinking a pair of 5 foot 2x8's double lag bolted to the top of each post would stop a lot of the side to side sway.

Am thinking a pair of these for pulleys.

I envy that kind of hunting, but not all the skinning, cutting, and wrapping. Yikes.

If your going for aesthetics use cedar. That's all you need, one pole and two trees. If the trees on you lot are small don't underestimate what they can hold up+ they grow

Two 6x6x16' buried and concreted about 3' into the ground; ~10' apart. The cross beam is three 2x10 treated, glued and screwed together. I don't know what it will hold but I've a +250 lb lead, steel and concrete wheel weight hanging off of it once. I've done a bunch of deer on it.

I just bought one of these on sale from Titan Attachments online for $423.95 as a "Meat Pole" to hang deer on and roll around on my concrete shop floor. This shop gantry gives me the versatility of doing deer on the outside pad if the weather is nice, then roll them inside to cut them up. And it should lift up high enough to back a pickup truck underneath to load deer. I could probably have made my own cheaper but didn't think that it was worth the trouble at that price.

Ours is a 15’ tall pipe A-frame with an electric winch. Cut from hock to hock and split skin down middle of belly/chest and it does the rest in about 15 secs. Keeps meat clean with very little hair. Drop rib cage and guts into a plastic tote and winch lifts it up to load in back of ranger to haul off. Even pulls hide off their ears

Looking back becasue of this post - our meat pole has been up about 20 years - hard to believe!
in the beginning - I had a big tractor tire swing on it for the kids. They loved plating on it when I was working at the cabin in the summer.
