KY Bull Archery Elk Tag

I got lucky this year and drew a KY bull archery elk tag. Season opens 9/15.

I’m planning to use my whitetail setup.

GT Velocities around 430ish grains (need to weigh them) tipped with Rage hypodermics.

Thoughts on this?

Also looking for any advice on elk hunting during the rut. I’m reading as much as I can .

Wow, congrats HB! It would be really cool to hunt elk in their historical eastern stomping grounds.

In general, whitetail setups for elk are just fine. I wouldn't be concerned shooting a 430 grain arrow into a bull. I personally would not recommend elk hunting with a mechanical broadhead, the bones on an elk are significantly larger than a whitetail. A rib shot on a deer is usually no big deal, I've shot through ribs on deer on the way in and out with no issues. There are so many quality fixed blade options that I feel silly recommending one but if it was me, I'd definitely be hunting with a fixed blade.

My bow is just over 72lbs now. I’ll be putting on new string/cables when they arrive. I’ll get everything in spec and check again.

I weighed my arrows last night and the GT kenetics I built a couple years ago are 510 grains and the GT velocities I hunt with now are 425 grains.

I’ll put them both through the chrono and see what each is doing.

Awesome! You will have a blast. I personally use Slick Tricks but my buddy killed a nice bull with Rage hypodermics so I know they will work. IMO, there is nothing better than hunting elk. This is probably a once in a lifetime tag so I think I would consider hiring a guide.

Of the two arrows, I would use the heavier one, and I would definitely go with a cut on contact fixed blade head. YMMV though, as I'm sure many elk have fallen to mechs.
