Is this a brassica?

As noted in another post, i planted the LC brassica mix on august 7, it was coming up good for a couple weeks, then no rain until this week, so all that good growth is gone. Checked on it today...lots of these..Are they just weeds?-they are thorny If so I am going to just broadcast some winter rye on top of the soil and hope for some growth

I'm not knowledgeable enough to say but whatever it is it looks like some sort of bug is eating on the leaves

It very well could be, I'm just trying to figure out if it is either turnips, radishes, rape, or weeds? Hope it's not weeds..

ryw

The first pic is horsenettle. It's a weed. The 2nd pic looks like brassica, those shouldn't have thorns.

If you don't get the germination you want you could always oversees with some winter rye to thicken up the stand and fill on the bare spots

I think the first pic is horse nettle - if it has thorns - it's not brassica......at least not one I am aware of.

I agree that the plant with the rounded leaves in the second photo looks like the brassica that I grow (LC mix). Not to pile onto your misfortune, but it looks like it has insect damage.

Mine looked really spare when they first came in.....

But they fill in pretty quickly...... (18 days later)

There were a few "bald patches" that filled in with weeds, but for the most-part it looks good. I have some insect damage, but nothing too damaging. I had a real hard time getting brassicas to grow last year, so I added 1300 lbs of lime to a 1/3 of an acre to bring the ph up from 5.9 to 6.3.... made a huge difference
