How can you not love buckwheat?

I was really impressed with how much time the deer spent in our buckwheat. They browsed it a lot, more then I anticipated or others said they would. I’m mixing red clovers in all of my fall plots this year, but if some doesn’t produce in the Spring, I’ll be sure to plant buckwheat again.

Has anyone ever mixed in sunflowers with buckwheat? Seems like it might protect the sunflowers until the got some height on them.
Also, what's your seeding rate for Throw N Mow ?

I mixed in sunflowers, they wiped them all out about a week ago. I thought I was going to get some flowers on them, but no luck.

Did they hit them from the beginning or did they seem to find them a couple weeks in? I would not expect flowers either but sunflowers are somewhere around 30% crude protein so you benefited your deer and took a little pressure off the buckwheat. Both good things.

I’m sure they found some early because I don’t think I saw 12 pounds worth of sunflowers growing. But without a doubt it protected a lot until they got 3 feet tall. Next time I plant buckwheat I will be going heavier on the sunflower seed I think.

I just bought black oil sunflower seeds from my local Ace Hardware. It was in the birdseed area.
