I use diesel instead of water. On tough trees I use triclopyr instead of gly.

catscratch - I'm really impressed with Fiskars hatchet. Just wish I had got one size bigger. Having used a machete years ago, the hatchet, at least in my case, is much more efficient. One wack at an angle and you get really good penetration. I picked it up at TSC and at the time, they were out of the next size up.
As for the chainsaw, I was listening to the MSU Deer University podcast a couple of weeks ago and Craig Harper was the guest. Most consider him one of the top "educated" experts in the field of habitat management. He also uses only the chainsaw. Says he has the option to girdle the tree and then squirt or just cut it down and squirt. Makes sense. I'm gonna wait a bit longer and prolly purchase one of the battery powered chainsaws for this purpose. Since this is my first year doing the hack n squirt thing, I'm gonna see how it does as the year progresses, particularly on the sweetgums.
Last comment on the sprayer. I've only used it twice and have ran 2 gal of gly thru it with no water added for hack n squirt. Impressed so far that the nozzle hasn't clogged in the least.

That's why I use the chainsaw. Almost went battery powered with a recent purchase but cut enough firewood to want the gas option. I'll tell ya though... not having to start and restart a saw while hacknsquirting a thicket of locust would be nice!

I think Ego 56v was the one I had decided on. Went to buy one, had it in hand and the wife said "You sure you don't want a Stihl? Batteries just seem like they'll hold to what you do." So I bought another Stihl instead.

I heard that the Milwaukee runs faster and has just transferred its existing technology from their electric chainsaws that they've had for years already. Oregon and Stihl each have a good brand reputation. The Dewalt chainsaw seems a bit chintzy.

I almost pulled the trigger on a Stihl battery saw last summer. They sure are nice but I could have bought 5 or 6 gas saws for the same price with the number of extra batteries I felt was required for a full day project. I ended up with an MS180.
