Gravity Feeders

Any of you guys use big, metal gravity feeders? I'm trying to find a model that would hold about 500 lbs of feed that squirrels couldn't chew into.

Tommy - We have 3 brands on the farm. The Texas Hunter barrel feeder is one of my favorites. Holds 300 lbs. One has been out since 2011 and still in use. Squirrels can climb the legs unless you use carpet tack strips. We have 2 of em. The Banks Outdoors feeder is well built. Had 2 of these for 4 years now. Only problem is they mount on a 4x4 treated post so make sure you know where you want it. Not convenient to move but very well built. We put a critter guard around the 4x4 to keep squirrels out. Pigs will nuzzle the feed ports loose but we solved that problem by sinking 4 long wood screws through the edge of the feed ports into the body of the feeder. Make out of polycarbonate material. 3rd feeder that has proven absolutely indestructible and bomb proof is the Double D gravity feeder made in S. GA. It's made of galvanized steel. Been out since 2011 and looks like it did the day we bought it. Holds 300 lbs and they make up to 800 lbs. Made by Wilderness Calls, www.wildernesscalls.com Pretty sure it will still be in use when I'm long gone.

I have the Banks feeder and I put a 6 in pvc pipe over the 4x4 to keep the squirrels and coons out. Welcome to the baiting club LLC!

LOL. We don't hunt over it. Only feed protein from late April to about mid August once antlers are finished growing.

I just bought a Banks feeder. I have a buddy that uses it and likes it. Putting it out this week but I mainly wanted it to feed protein because I use troughs mainly and wanted to try it because I had heard good things about them. My buddy said it only clogged once when we just had the hurricane.

I’m also in the market for one. The big question is, will any of the ones on the market hold up to a hungry black bear that didn’t go in over winter. The only time I would like to use them is say December-March.

Keep us posted on how it works. I know AC really likes his.

Another vote for the banks feed bank. Works flawless so far no feed issues. Did great at first when I was using a corn pellet mix to get them started on the pellets

I have a banks 4 port...it took the deer here approximately 6 months before I ever saw 1 actually eat from a port on camera. It was over a month before I got a single deer picture at it so be aware it may take some time for them to fully utilize it...

Now my problem is I can’t keep corn on it. 300 lbs every 3-4 days...

Damn! That's got to be expensive!

If a guy ever needs a smaller feeder, I highly recommend the T post feeder from Redneck blinds. I bought a couple of them this year and they work great, they hold about 60lbs of BB2. I think I'm going to mix more cracked corn into the BB2 to try and cheapen things up. Ive got an unlimited supply of cracked corn already

I have 2 banks feeders....think they hold 300 lbs. Hogs got so bad I quit using them. They loosened a wing nut from feed port and spilled out 200 lbs of corn. (Like the idea of wood screws Triple C). The hogs were not tall enough to feed at the manufacturers recommend height, so they would step on another hogs back and feed while standing. I raised them up 4 more inches. The higher they are the easier it is for a hog to bump the 4*4 and spill corn out. They actually have begun to damage the ports themselves.

Overall it's a solid feeder, the hogs are just relentless animals. I haven't baited during the season, but this winter my last attempt will be to put some serious hog fencing up. Maybe 24/36 inches. Maybe a 10 foot radius.

Squirrels are not a problem where I am.

I know you guys have bears. How do you keep bear out of them. No way would one survive more than a few wks here.

Take 10 hog panels and make a round pen. I cut my T posts off to be flush with the top of the panels when the plate is buried on the T post. We have to pen all our feeders here unless you want the hogs lounging around all day. After doing this, my deer pics doubled and hogs virtually disappeared off my game cam pics. I've never had a hog in the pens. What won't keep them in will keep them out !

A ten foot radius will be too small IMO. Eight to ten hog panels will be enough room that they won't feel crowded.

Dang, I sure would like to help some of y'all with your hog problems.

I just rid myself of my biggest hog problem when I sold my 217 acres. Here at home, they don't bother me quite as much, and on my lease they are just a nuisance.

My big place though, they were a constant source of irritation. It's a wet natured place and they rooted great craters in the ground, wash tub sized craters. It was a pain in the butt to mow, or travel in my golf cart around the perimeter. I got so tired of discing and dragging the areas that they liked to root. Everybody wants hogs until they get a bunch of them, and I got a BUNCH of them.
