sorry Im just getting into the gafting stage of my apples and I have a question for the more experienced person. I have allot of wild apples and apples Ive planted can I gafted them on a wild Torn apple tree? I have a ton of thorn apple tree ls Id like to convert over if possible?

Also is there any good videos on tree gafting? Im most interested in top gafting.

I tried grafting onto southern crab apples (a thony, wild variety) with zero luck. On all other rootstocks I've had well over 90% success.

Yes they fruit. Usually green to maybe yellow, about 1 1/2" in diameter. Deer love them.

Not sure about persimmon. I've never been successful at grafting persimmons.

Normally the 'thorny' variety of a wild crab is a Siberian Crab. Those have multiple reports of being 'picky' with compatibility issues. Generally speaking people have success grafting crab varieties to them but not 'full size apple cultivators'.

Im going to give it a try this spring and see what happens. I believe my throney Apples are actully Hawthorns after a closer look.

I do have a bunch of well established wild apple trees Im going to add some late droppers onto.

Chad you may want to focus on Pears for Hawthorne grafts as those would have a better chance of surviving.

You think I could have a good chance of survival? Ill give that a try with those. Any chnace do you know a good resource for some Pear Scions? I know Bartlets do well in my area just dont have any myself to pull from.

The only pear variety i would have to send is 'Flemish Beauty'. I'm sure between here and a couple other forums you could snag some varieties without a problem, there are multiple scion swap threads right now.
