Front Shoulder

Why do we, myself included, call a deer’s shoulder it’s front shoulder instead of it’s left or right shoulder? It doesn’t have rear shoulders. Or any other shoulder(s). Just curious. Thanks in advance.

The term is often used because the scapula is in the upper front of the shoulder area and the connecting bone below that is in the mid front of the shoulder area. The scapula area is the shot placement location some hunters choose to put a deer down quickly with a heavily constructed bullet that will plow through. A shot in the rear of the shoulder area will miss the scapula and connecting bones.
