"The Urban Wildlife Institute correlated data and research to explain how the presence of the buckthorn in forest preserves and wildlife areas correlates to increased prevalence of carnivores. Previous research by Chris Whelan of the Illinois Natural History Survey documented that “carnivores can prey more easily on native bird eggs and young birds when nests are built in buckthorn and honeysuckle compared to nests built in native shrubs or trees.”"

Another reason buckthorn is bad.
 
I agree completely Buckthorn is mostly a bad plant and it is tough to eradicate it. On a large property there may not be enough working days in a year to completely kill it off.

“We now know that there are significantly more coyotes, raccoons and opossums in buckthorn invaded areas, and significantly fewer white-tailed deer,” Seth Magle, director of the Urban Wildlife Institute at Lincoln Park Zoo, said."

As they say, bad. We have buckthorn here but I am not sure if I have ever seen it. Let sleeping dogs lie.

I just found out this week the yard is full of it. Great!!!
 
You can knock it back. I've knocked back 4.5 acres of it. You will need to follow up with spraying multiple times. Is it in your lawn or in tree line areas?
